Title: When to upload seasonal images?
Post by: Alatriste on September 25, 2008, 09:32
For example for Christmas.
Designers dont look for images during Christmas as they must have their proyects done so... When is the most demanding period for seasonal images?

I think there are two options missing:
- depending on agency
- does not matter

I agree with UncleGene. The best is, your portfolio have images for all seasons. So many contributors shooting fireworks-images on New Year´s Eve. After Image editing, uploading and pending, their images are online nearly a week ago. Too early for the next year, too late for the past one.
If your portolio has images with all 4 Seasons, you can see, which pics are selling when.
Since August my Winter images are selling well. At December/January my Summer pics are running.

Sold a Christmas image last week, so the answer is, you should have them up yesterday.  :D

Many projects are planned well in advance. If you only have them up at the last minute, last month, you will absolutely be missing sales. Easter and St. Patrick's Day, and whatever else falls into the first 3-4 months, should be up right after New Years.

For those writing year round, that would be in advance, wouldn't it?  ;D

For website sales, it doesn't matter as much. But for anything that's going to be printed, you need to anticipate the designing and printing scheduling.

If you were making a 2009 calendar, it should be done already and up for sale. Very last introduction date would be October 1st. After that, you are already falling behind the competition and the needs of the consumers.

Having a lot of xmas images in my port, I can tell you they sell throughout the whole year but i can see a peak starting september to november. December they still sell but going downhill.

However, images for halloween for example won't really sell that well if you upload too soon. I'd say start with them about one month ahead.

I've had seasonal images selling months in advance and on the same day and even just after it.  So I think it really doesn't matter (an option not available here at the poll).

Since August my Winter images are selling well.
I had a nice surge of winter scenes sells in several agencies in June-July.... But everything depends on the particular stock's search (that's why I've suggested one more option) and intended use - small images and SS have emphasis on new, everything larger and 'extendier' - all over the year. So, if you have > 60% income from SS - try to time the market, if not - does not matter.

Guys, if you're waiting until 1-2 months out, you're missing the boat. The design company I work for is already doing holiday projects and buying holiday-themed stock images. I'd assume many other companies are doing the same.

Sorry, Im lost (I need to improve my english seriously).
Are you saying that your company is now working in xmas themes? or that they are done?

Some are in-progress, some are done, some are just getting started. And sure, we'll need more holiday images all through the season, but waiting until 1-2 months from Christmas to upload holiday images is a mistake. The buying season starts in the summer.

This company is pretty small, and I know that bigger design companies are working on holiday projects even earlier than us. They have to in order to stay on schedule.
