Title: Where can I find pics of autos shows that are not editorial only?
Post by: benfreidlin on October 10, 2012, 22:54
I am in need of one or two high quality pics of a recent auto show, preferably something that shows several cars in one frame. Everything I find online has an editorial license limitation, making it unsuitable for promotional use. I plan to use it as the background image for a commercial website (completely tasteful site). Does anyone know where I can find such photos with royalty free licenses and the proper releases? Is it even possible?

edit: fixed a spelling error in title

Will be very hard to find, especially on royalty free websites. Very few (if any) photographers will go to the trouble trying to get property releases from manufacturers (will probably not get it either).

Perhaps try some of the sites of the manufacturers (with their own photos of their vehicles) and if you find something suitable, try to obtain a usage right from them to use it on your site. With proper motivation and example of your site they might see it as free marketing and grant you permission.

Manufacturers will still recognise their cars. They might actually get more upset since their design would be defaced. Also not sure if the buyer wants to show defaced cards either.

Try Fotolia. They don't do editorial so anything there is usable commercially.

I'm guessing they don't accept items of a copyright or trademarked nature.

I'm extremely surprised. I'm guessing these are not released, based on the fact that I checked out the ports of some of the togs and they only have one or two of the cars. If you had releases, you'd surely take as many angles and details as possible, knowing you had something someone else could not get.
Are they taking a huge risk, or do they know something the other agencies don't?

Added: checked the agreement which says:
"The Non-Exclusive Downloading Member acknowledges that Fotolia generally does not have releases for the trademarks, logos or other intellectual property of other parties that may be depicted in some Works. The procuring of such releases is the responsibility of the Non-Exclusive Downloading Member. "

It may be that in some cases, the buyer could get releases for a specific use. The very few people who have responded to my requests for releases would not give releases for stock, as the end use was so open. If I'd been able to say they were 'for an article in X newspaper/magazine/TV programme' it would probably have been OK, if the said newspaper/mag/prog matched their aspirations.

I wonder how many buyers bother to read the agreement.

That is quite a good statement from FT, I have to say. Such an entry might have saved Yuri as well.

Still wondering tho why FT would still reject images for copyright? I have a few specific images lined up, it would be interesting to see if they reject them or not for copyright.

Still in the end, if the OP would purchase the images, he still would need to take care of the releases. I dont think any car manufacturer would hand out releases that easily.
