Title: Who belongs to Whom?
Post by: WarrenPrice on May 13, 2009, 11:29
I'm considering signing up with 123rf.  I started following them on Twitter.  A recent Twitter post aroused my curiosity.  123rf posted (tweeted) a link to Inmagine.  Are they affiliated?

That got me to thinking ... Does anyone have a list of which agencies are affiliated?  What the relationship is?

Would you mind posting a list or a link here?

Thanks,

Yes, 123 is owned by Inmagine.  StockXpert is owned by Haap Media which is owned by Jupiter which is owned by Getty.  Istock is owned by Getty.  Snapvillage and Veer are owned by Corbis.  Canstock is owned by Fotosearch

As far as I know the other micros are all independently owned.  I hope they stay that way.

And Getty is owned by Hellman & Friedman (Mayonnaise HQ). Take a look at their  portfolio (http://www.hf.com/investments/Investments.aspx) of investments - quite a collection they have amassed.

Interestingly they also own GeoVera insurance which provides our earthquake insurance (after Allstate bugged out of that business). Now I understand why the rates took a huge jump at this last renewal!!

Does Alamy in any way have a relationship with 123rf?  I ask because of another Twitter post from 123rf.

Even if there is no relationship, this is an interesting article:

I don't think alamy has anything to do with 123rf.  Getty sell through alamy, so some istock RF exclusives that have uploaded to Getty have their RF photos on alamy.  I don't know if Inmagine use alamy.

it will be interesting to see this in a year or two.  there are still a couple of biggish macro players without a micro stake (masterfile, photolibrary, etc)

I am gearing for a submission to the wildlife library nhpa http://www.nhpa.co.uk/ and went to have another look and see they are now one of about 8 libraries with a combined site photoshot.com which has a tab for microstock as well as their macro libraries.  there was no images two weeks ago, just a note coming soon, but just saw tonight there is about a whole 6 images :):) interesting to see how serious they are with it.

LOL

I dont know about sales, but wildlife doesn't do especially well in micro. I have told it will do better in macro world, but specialised libraries. The main library in australia 'antphoto' requires $5 per image, not a big deal but to me it goes against the grain to pay an agency. Most of the others here dont seem real big etc (of course its always very hard to know and get information)

I looked at about 6 or 7 wildlife agencies and basically like the look of nhpa,  I've been told that they are well respected within the industry (but whether that equals sales I do not know).  They also do not require exclusivity (its not stuff I'll put on micro, but it would be nice to be able to put on another 1 or 2).   I am also told they are one the hardest to get into, so I thought I'd aim high :), just need to get a few more good shots to round out the submission.

Rgds
