Title: your cell phone is NOT a camera !!!!
Post by: Randy McKown on January 17, 2010, 15:42
I have reviewed several photographers this week who uploaded shots taken with camera phones ... this is just annoying .. ok actually it makes my job easier because it was a no-brainer to reject all their photos like a madman .. but come on people ... camera phones ?!?!?!?!?!

For where you're a reviewer are there guidelines for what is and isn't acceptable as a camera to submit from?

I think you won't have many answers from anyone shooting stock with phones. I never heard this before... Which agency are you reviewing for?

Sorry I can't state specifics. My non-disclosure contracts with all the agencies I've worked for prohibit me from publicly stating that I was either employed by them or did any consulting for them. I can say though that I'm pretty sure all the agencies have some type of acceptance guideline in place that should have made it obvious to the contributor that these images would not work .. I'm talking about images so bad you can't tell where the blurring ends and the noise begins.

The Sony Ericsson ad doesn't surprise me. The quality requirements for microstock are honestly much more demanding than what is actually required to push a quality full page spread through a print press. ( A good reason why so many old school pros often become frustrated so quickly by their rejections)

That was funny.  I actually had someone tell me to do that.  I don't know if they were serious or making a funny.  I'll just wait until we get a new computer for that and use our Nikon instead ;)

There's probably a market out there to make usable images out of cell phone shots. I do a lot of reproduction prints for artists and have recovered many 2 and 3 megapixel camera shots that the artist had taken herself of an original that was no longer available. "Recovered" meaning making a 5 x7 print possible. Not technically great at all by micro stock standards. But usable. And chargeable.

With the millions of cell phone shots taken daily I can imagine people wanting a decent print of a unique moment. I'm sure they would be frustrated by most of the locally available services for commercial prints. Hey, another new business idea: Cell Phone Photo Rescue.

A lot of traditional sites judge a photo on it's merits which could mean technically, aesthetically or subject related and not on what camera was used to take it, but I appreciate the microstock sites are not paying a reviewer to make an industry experienced judgement but more to enforce some technical guidelines.
