I've been on Alamy and I'm switching over to the microsites.  The return seems to be higher.  What I'm wondering is how many microsites do you use.  Right now I'm attempting to upload them to Istockphoto, Shutterstock, Fotolia, Feature Pics, Dreamstime and BigStockPhoto.  Is it worth my time to upload it to that many or should I spend the extra time shooting more pictures.  Simply from a business point of view what is the best use of my time.  I'm only getting my initial images approved so I haven't had time to evaluate which site will bring me the largest return.  But my guess is Shutterstock and Istockphoto and then the rest.  What are your thoughts?

I am on alamy as well, but I don't think there is a need for total switch over.  Pictures that you took which are very specific location, or copyright material, or newsworthy may sell better on alamy.  However talking about the micros.

Shutterstock is a no brainer.. submit to them
Istock.  They have good earnings but I find it fairly laboursome to submit too.  I still submit, but I grumble every time.  I also find the 20 image/day upload limit a pain.
Dreamstime- they have been good.  not as good of a $/picture/year as Istock or shutterstock (which are about the same) but I have good income from them
Bigstock, and Fotolia - they are about the same in earnings. Bigstock is a little easier to upload to I think, However Fotolia gives the .20 per accepted image which ads a fair bit.

I also submit everything to stockxpert and 123RF.  Stockxpert takes 0 work to submit to... it is just a matter of letting your ftp uloader fun, then click 1 button to submit the 200 images you just uploaded (if you have embeded keywords and titles)... very simple.  123 RF is almost as easy as they don't have any catagories.... so i find uploading to them is generally well worth my time, despite the low earnings there.

I don't submit to feature pics... I haven't heard of much action there.. but if you hear different, I would be interested in knowing.

I am actively uploading to all sites in this list:

http://www.microstockphoto.co.uk

Also subscribed to SF yesterday (cause I trust its creators which come from SX) but I'm still waiting for validation.
And also subscribed to FP, CC, YAY, MP, CS but stopped uploading since it's useless for me (very few or no sales at all).

To answer to the OP, yes I think it's worth to upload to many sites. If you use IPTC and FTP it's quite easy task. Just avoid the non-sellers (which are worse than low-sellers).

I don't have the same proportion, but FT is not rarely my best earner.

If I were submitting, IS, DT, FT and BigStock would be my first choices.  FP is indeed a problem now, nothing is happening, but I like to support them.  123 and CanStockPhoto for me are a waste of time.

My submissions are now down to 3 sites and these are in the Top 4.
I find it very hard now to get motivated by new startup sites!

Top right side of this page--absolutely. Al of the others are a waste of time, IMHO, despite easy uploading. Even checking those monthly isn't worth the effort.
