This looks like a new kind of post from Yuri.... :o Much more personal than the previous ones.

Actually worth reading
-
Yes, good reading. I've wondered about the steps one takes to get there in the past.
I think the importance of forcing the launch early was overestimated. I can't imagine the world would end if people found a dead end for a day ( although we did poke at it here ;) ).
-
An interesting and honest account of how the new site was created (set backs and all). The overnight race to get the site live after news leaked out actually made for gripping reading. Thanks for posting the link! Regards, David.
-
Thanks for the link.
I've always liked reading Yuri's articles, even though generally irrelevant to me - always interesting.

Hopefully those programmers got a nice long vacation.

Don't think so (probably a bonus though). They had to get this thing out of Beta asap as well.
Yuri showed some good stamina there. It must be a true nightmare to figure it all out by yourself - I wish I could do everything by myself but sometime you have to let go of some responsibilities and that to (hopefully) competent people.
The site looks great. And I think over time it will improve even more. Now he has the 100% cash flow option in his own hands - must be a good feeling.

Well yes. Sales are few still, but regular and increasing. More than I expected. peopleimages.com will not be able to compete against the big buys in the marketplace. We are too specialized.
For the right kind of client we are perfect however. And we are starting to see that, because our customers are absolutely crazy about us. One actually sent me a pair of socks to my private adress, thanking me for finally giving them a "proper" workplace. There must be a pretty big built up pressure inside some of these designers.
Socks... Can you believe that! :)

Socks, that's one of those gifts you can't really go wrong :)

I find that to be the case in web-land. For some reason site launches are decided in the first week of operation, if it fails most start-ups are declared non viable so the importance of launching quick was probably warranted. This is a Silicon valley thing but it could translate anywhere. The paranoid survive is the motto.
However as a site that will grow and offer a unique set of products Yuri probably has less to worry about and surely not about timing of a few days.
Yuri, the post is great thanks for taking the time to blog about it all. Would like to hear more about the story in the future.

I like the slow and steady approach myself. It's way too easy to waste money on the internet.

I seriously believe you should keep that to yourself, if I was a buyer, even a very weird one I would like to have my privacy, but hey sure you won´t be fired because of this post :D

You'd think so - but I got two left-footed ones once!

And how exactly did he violate the buyer's privacy? By saying "one customer"? Ya, that's enough to get his name, address, facebook profile, credit card nubmer, pin. And we all know which customers he's reffering to. Ah.
-
I sent the person a personal thank you letter and treated him with the highest degree of respect. It's still a funny story and I am 100% sure that he does not mind me sharing it here. After all, sending socks are done in a humorous attempt, in the very same was as it was used in my post here. So harm done for sure.

Hilarious Spike :D
From a blog post to socks and a privacy talk again.
Burning question is. What color Socks?

very nice article Yuri !
you did the right move fending off from the RoR guys ... and others would have come up offering to rewrite the whole site in ASP or Python.
unfortunately there's this tendency in engineering to perpetually reinvent the wheel over and over again, they're sometimes called "scratchers" as they love to start from scratch, my experience instead was that once they finish the job they're the only ones who are able to put their hands in the code base and this will cost you a lot of money in case of future upgrades and fixes.
a quicker option would have been to buy one of the many expensive CMS used by other photo archives and agencies but they're not gonna come cheap and they're not at all easy to use and customize especially if the client is a perfectionist ...
my best wishes for PeopleImages, i really like your site it's fresh and with nice colors and i like the grouping in the popup thumbnails.

Great article. The titanic effort was well worth it. A great and easy to navigate site that for sure will have a strong audience.
