Author Topic: "Unsupported file" error for video exported from Sony software (Read 433 times)

So I exported a video from Sony Movie Studio and uploaded it to SS. I was also planning to upload the same file to AS and P5 but I got an "unsupported file" error on SS. And this has me puzzled. It's an mp4 video and has a frame rate of 25fps. According to VLC, it has the h264 codec and it's also an MPEG-4 video. And apparently, both SS and AS accept MPEG-4 videos. The codec information in VLC also mentions AVC (part 10) and avc1. I thought that surely, a video with those specs would be acceptable but I don't know much about AVC. Would anyone have any ideas on why I'm get an "unsupported file" error for this video file on SS?

Yes, all this looks extremely cowardly and mean on the part of those people. But you should understand that I am also not obliged to answer questions that I may know the answers to. Given the huge number of enemies, I am not sure that my altruism on the forum is appropriate.

Maybe someone will see the original question, instead of the way the thread went off topic and no one is answering what you needed help with. Sorry I don't know Sony software or why this would happen.

Curious what is the resolution of the video and what file extension does it have for its file name?

I wonder if it has something to do with your fps.

Maybe you can try to export your clips at 23.98 fps (NTFC) and see if they are accepted.

Resolution is 1920 x 1080. And the file extension is .mp4. I just did some googling and apparently, AVC is just another name for h264. But I don't know what AVC part 10 and AVC1 specifically mean.

25fps is accepted by all agencies that take video. 25fps is also the most common frame rate world wide. More countries use 25fps than 23.98 fps. When I first started stock video years ago, I shot all my footage at 25fps and never had any issues from the agencies related to frame rate. Of course I didn't expect to have any issues because it's such a common frame rate. The most common frame rates are 24 fps, 25 fps and 23.98 fps.

See the video characteristics in this program: MediaInfo.
Copy them here.
Do you have problems with only one file? Did all similar files go through to SS?
Trim your file a little in your program, make a new rendering and upload your file to SS under a different name. Report the result.

I did manage to obtain a fair amount of info from VLC which I posted above.

This is the only file exported from Sony Movie Studio. Other video files that were exported from Shotcut go through without any problem.

I do prefer using the Sony software for trimming though as it's more refined and precise. Shotcut is more clunky and sometimes not accurate when it comes to trimming.

Maybe I'll check out MediaInfo.

It's not just the precise trimming that attracts me to Sony Movie Studio. When I adjust the brightness and contrast with this particular footage using the Sony software, it looks 'just right.' Whereas when Ive tried to do the same with Shotcut and Adobe Premier Elements, it doesn't look quite as good to my eyes.

Ive just remembered that that I have another clip exported from Sony Movie Studio. The technical specifications should be the same but the duration is different. I could try uploading that one to SS and see what happens.

This latest file (also exported from Sony Movie Studio) uploaded fine to SS without any issue. It's currently waiting for me to fill in the metadata. So now I'm puzzled. I thought it was something to do with the Sony software settings that created the problem for the first file. Though all settings should be identical between the two files. The first file was a bit longer at 47 seconds (well within the 60 second limit imposed by most agencies.) The second file runs for 42 seconds.

Ive never had this "unsupported file" error for any other video upload.

Well the second video file that was exported from Sony Movie Studio (that runs for 42 seconds) was successfully submitted to SS. I was also able to submit this file to P5 and AS as well. No problems at all.

Maybe I'll get MediaInfo to analyse both video files so that a comparison could be made.
