Title: Artbeats - Closing its Doors in 7 days - RIP!
Post by: jamesbenet on February 21, 2018, 17:58
Artbeats used to be the real first royalty-free video company in the 90s which seemed to thrive when the net made clip downloads accessible. They used to offer the best quality anywhere with film scanned pyrotechnics and other effects which cost a lot to produce.

They were also very expensive at $499 each in some cases. Now they are closing their doors in 7 days and you can get the entire clip collection for $2,599 on two 8TB drives dang!!!   Wonder if they tried to sell to other sites for pennies on the dollar and had no takers.

I remember how hard it was to get a clip on their site as an independent producer and was turned down when I tried which seemed counter-intuitive since they had clips of much lesser quality than what I was offering.  Maybe this barrier of entry is the one that did them in by being unable to grow the collection and adapt to microstock offerings which offered all sorts of quality and price points.  For any TV, production house or Movie studio, the bargain bundle may be worth a look for 14k clips.  For me, I will pass and rather invest in a new camera.  Adapt or perish!  :-\

The email I got from Artbeats below:

Yeah, shame to see them go. I signed up for Artbeats Express at the end of 2015, and although the sales figures weren't very good, they were a nice addition to my monthly earnings. They invited me to join the main Artbeats site in 2016 but unfortunately I didn't get a single sale there. Thought that was a bit strange... hopefully their reporting works!

But yeah, I remember finding Artbeats over ten years ago when I was first getting into video and stock and the like. They always seemed to be pretty cutting edge with really high quality aerial shots before drones were around, 4K stuff, loads of 3D footage, high framerate stuff etc. I guess the prices were just too high to justify compared to the competition.

I did think it was strange that they were just shutting their doors due to the owners retiring. You would have though they'd sell the company or just appoint people to run it for them. Still, maybe they have their reasons.

Someone will probably buy the rights altogether and put the entire collection on the big stocksites.

They don't have the rights to sell the rights.

"Artbeats-owned library"

The majority of their stuff was shot and is owned by them. Would make sense to sell on their collection once they've got as much as they can from this offer.

Anyone get their "final" payouts from ABE yet?  I haven't.  I wonder if anything of mine was downloaded in February.

I got my January payment a couple of days ago... but I'm hoping there's still a 'final payout' to go, from February's sales (whatever they may have been).

Winner: that's close enough, they put their own collection on Microstock and other agencies. From agency to competition in one big swoop.
