Could be a long thread as I wonder about footage/video in general?

First an easy one. I just looked at SS and saw a video that says 1989. OK there was no HD and no high quality digital tape back then. I have 8MM video and I've been told, don't bother, it's not good enough.

Do I assume the 1989 is converted from 16mm film or some pro equipment from the late 80s. It's not VHS or Beta or anything on tape that we could afford.

I have some old 16mm from the 50s, could I have it digitized and try selling it on SS. (ignore the more important question, is it even worthy of stock and good content) Just asking about the physical limitations and technology.

Might be worth asking this in the SS footage forum.  The Pond5 forums are good as well.

The 1989 footage may have been betacam (not betamax the VHS competitor). You're right it's not consumer stuff as betacams were used in TV production at that time recorded to 3/4 inch tape (VHS is 1/2 inch). It could also be, as you said, film stock. Good quality 16mm film digitized would give very good results. A lot of low budget movies in the 80's were shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm for theatrical release.

I would ask before digitizing old 16mm from the 50's because the cost might make it a colossal waste if they're not interested.
