Just wondering.

Never heard of anyone doing that. Pretty unlikely it would get accepted.

Agreed. OP, try to do it.  Create a 4k project and drop a 1080P into it, tell the computer to make it fit and view your quality at 100%.  Almost guaranteed it will be substandard.  You will probably be able to see quality flaws at 50%.

Of course not.

The other way around though, if the 4k sharpness isn't top notch. Why try to sell sub-standard clips on purpose?

As an editor or a curator you'd have to be completely asleep not to see this.

Did try with few cDNG 1080p clips. Went through everywhere with no problems.

And any buyer with decent eyes will never buy from you again.

They probably just scraped through, as the source quality was so high (presuming it was well shot and well lit)... but even so, it's still going to be noticeable. Why not pump it up to 8K and sell it at a premium?!

Has anyone used GoPro 4K footage? It's much worse than our upscaled 1080p. #justsayin

And SD footage scaled up to 4K looks much worse than GoPro 4K or your 1080p upscale to 4K... but that doesn't mean that your 1080p upscaled to 4K looks good!

On a side note... if shot in good light, and scaled down from 4K to 1080p, GoPro footage looks pretty decent!

That's not my point. Stock is flooded with Gopro 4K videos and HD too, even if they are crap.

Doesn't mean it's right though, or that they look any good... and at least there are four different pixels over a four pixel grid with GoPro 4K, rather one, as bad as those four pixels may be!

1080p is not a 2K resolution so you cannot upscale to 4k without changing the ratio. You can upscale from FHD 1080 to UHD  2160 without changing the ratio. but UHD is not 4k either

2k and 4k are official cinematic resolutions and the terms are incorrectly used by TV manufacturers and the consumers.

actual 2k resolution = 2048 × 1080 and not 1920 x 1080

Yeah, but the ratio isn't really the issue. Losing a bit of content at the top and the bottom is less of an issue than scaling the clip up by over eight times its normal size.

Like it or not (and accurate or not), 3840x2160 is now considered 4K.

its not really by oficial standards, what Joe and other amateurs call it doesn't make it official

its laziness to call it 4k

UHD is considered a 4k standard. By everyone, not just Joe.

You're both right, 3840x2160 is a 4K standard, and 4096x2160 is also a 4K standard. It's just that you're wrong in stating that 3840x2160 isn't a 4K standard.

I shoot most of my stuff with Sony FS7 at DCI 4K (4096x2160).
I had a few batches with clips that I shot in slow motion at a 150 fps in HD.
Because of the setup I have in media encoder these clips were automatically converted to 4K.
I forgot about it, only to find out they got accepted (all of them) to all the sites. (including the scrutinizing SS)
They all looked much better than a GH4 4k clips, not to mention crappy looking GoPro 4K footage.
So - I think up-res is wrong in terms of being honest with buyers - but if the camera is good - the technical quality will not stop anyone.

I find that very hard to believe. In fact, the word impossible comes to mind (if by better you mean detail).

More dynamic range, maybe, but there's not a chance upscaled FS7 HD is sharper than GH4 4k.

An upscaled 1920x1080 image from a full-frame DSLR of your choice does not come close to GH4 4k.
