I'm not sure if it increased the total sales at pond5. It seems like everybody's complaining the sales hasn't been growing since the introduction of the public domain free clips. If the overall sales hasn't been growing there, they should consider pulling out the free public domain clips from the site to see if the sales will grow.
Any opinion?

Public Domain is P5 CEO's baby (https://vimeo.com/118644920) so therefore pulling out public domain clips will NEVER happen.
btw...I do agree, that should GO and they should form a proper sales dept to chase some income.

We've been down a similar path before, but .... My opinion is if sales are stagnant (and they surely are for me), then the primary cause is most likely the increase in supply, not any decrease in demand (due to PD clips or anything else).

I donīt see the public domain clips competing with any of the regular stock content. I actually like the project, sometimes a business needs to be more than a business.
I think we all need to wait and see what autumn brings and look carefully at your niche how much new competition is coming in.

My sales were doing quite well on P5 until May, then maybe one sale per month after that (from 4-6 per month). Something definitely changed, whether summer slump or a blend of slump and some kind of search change. I don't think PD clips had anything to do with my decline, though. More about a combination of demand, search and summer slow-down.

I still cant fathom how video professions can feel threatened from archive footage.
Archived footage is not just conveying an idea or a message but the social and chronological context in which this action is taking place.So it's very specific by nature.
Meaning that unless you produce very accurate representations of an era (and even then i doubt if it's relevant) then you have no reason to feel that you are losing sales from scanned 8-16mm b/w film.
Im afraid of losing sales too but not from archived footage.
Can we please stop chasing dragons?

Yeah i know what this is, im asking you something very specific though since you feel the need to interject saying "here's what the majority says"
Any thoughts of your own on this thread about why public library poses a threat to your sales?

I have to agree with this statement.
Why would you think this public domain video is causing sales to drop? I certainly don't see commercials on TV using only PD footage.
I shoot a lot of "vintage" type video from different eras of the 1800's to the mid 1940's. My film noir clips are still a great seller even with PD footage.

Some WWII fighter pilot videos I shot on green screen and CG. They sell pretty well.

The point is old grainy footage is for specific projects, I can't see any reason they would be making sales slump. Probably its because there are a ton of clips like what you may produce.

Oh if you still think PD footage is taking your sales. Fight back and use them in your own project :)
I used one and put me in it using my Iphone. Hasn't sold but it was a fun little project.

Only Pond5 knows if the overall sales of video clips have increased or decreased since the introduction of public domain clips. One thing I worry is that time is money and more time potential buyers go through public domain clips on Pond5 and sometimes find clips that could replace paid clips, overall sales can go down. I hope it's not the case, but I don't know. Pond5 did this to increase the traffic and sales as a result. So, I hope it's working.
