Title: Need some help from some of the more knowledgable stock creators!
Post by: Abstract.Arts on April 08, 2019, 13:33
Hi guys, I'm currently doing a degree in Film and TV Production Technology and am doing my dissertation on stock footage. I'm looking to get some feedback from some successful stock creators and it seems like you have a lot of content creators here doing well. I have created a survey which won't take more than 5 minutes to complete, it's designed to gather primary feedback from successful/knowledgable stock creators.

I'd really appreciate if you could spend a couple of minutes to complete my survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LJ85PS6 (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LJ85PS6)

My experience is mainly in documentaries/short films etc but i do plan to dip my toe in to the world of stock footage in the future so I plan on sticking around here to soak up the experience of you guys. I'm stressing at the minute as my dissertation is du in 3 weeks  :o but it will soon be all over!

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask

The survey is:  I want to sell stock footage please show me the content I should copy.  You can see best sellers on most sites.  What's the point of this?

Like you say, you can see the best sellers on most sites so if i wanted to copy footage I would already be doing that. My goal is to use primary research from established content creators to put together some stats on what has worked well in practice, as well as using psychology studies/various clinical studies about what shapes/colours etc are pleasing to the human brain and input from marketing companies on what appeals to them when sourcing stock. I have no desire to copy anyones work and am competent enough to originate my own work. This research is purely for my dissertation.

Thank you to the first person who completed the survey, much appreciated, that was extremely quick!

**Edit, it seems Tickstock has completed the survey and skipped all the questions to be nasty. Seems like a nice guy.....

Can't you get all that info from just looking at the best sellers?

That information is valuable to me (and it should be to everyone) but I could let it go for, say, $10,000? Years of data, not just on sales, but search engines and everything else unique to each site.

Sorry, but I would not want this information to be publicly available in a dissertation. Or to anyone "planning to dip their toe into the world of stock footage", dissertation or not. ;)

It's standard practice to the point of being a cliche to have a survey in a dissertation these days.

I read them.  What's my username, what's my best seller, how many sales do I have, what elements increase sales.  Good luck with that Mr. Abstract.Arts if that is your real name.

Really? Why can I find about a million of them online then?

Tickstock is not being nasty I checked your questions and refused to answer them.

It's called personal choice and if you knew anything about how to conduct a survey then you would understand you'll get participants who do not wish to answer all or any questions.

Anyway surveys should be anonymous how do you know Tickstock didn't answer the questions.

Sorry how the heck can you derive any empirical data of that type from that survey?

As part of your "Academic Studies" you should be informed that that survey would be considered totally unethical and breaking all the rules of bodies such as the Market Research Society. At the very least you should detail who you are , the purpose of the survey and what you will use the data for and how it will be processed. In the UK you could even find yourself prosecuted as you are asking for profile names which is personal data. Good luck with your studies.

Like the other person who is allegedly doing an academic study, I'd expect far more official information from your university detailling your course, why this info is needed, details about you and your director of studies, where the results would be published etc, rather than just a totally anonymous survey monkey page.

In my idle moments I complete surveys for bodies doing academic research. Every survey is even accompanied by a "risk" assessment details of the institution and survey purpose AND I get paid for it ;-).

Obviously a non-academic survey intended to take precious information and use it for personal gain. It even has spelling errors (Q3: "How long have you ben a video stock creator?"). None of these questions will give any useful statistics for academical analysis.

Asking for my username is beyond ridiculous. Why would I divulge info to you about my best-selling stock items?

You are way off the mark. The survey is for primary research. If I wanted to copy peoples best selling stock items surely it makes sense that I would view the most sold items which are widely available on most sites as previously mentioned by someone else. The only personal gain I expect is to pass my degree with a first class honours for which I am currently in a good position to do so. Well done for spotting the typo but this has no bearing on the legitimacy of my request.

I have asked for usernames so people who complete the survey can be confirmed as genuine and it is less invasive than asking for a real name or email address. I have no issue with you not wanting to complete the survey but please don't try and sabotage it. I'm more than willing to take on any suggestions you have to improve the survey and resolve your personal issues with it.

Surveys are normally supposed to be anonymous, as certain answers may be private. When you ask for names and other personal information, you need to comply to privacy laws as well, how you store the information and for how long. By asking our (user)names you could easily build a complete picture of each and every participant.

You're talking about me sabotaging your survey. I'm just warning people and at the same time lecturing you that this is a very questionable way to gather statistical information, ESPECIALLY if it's used for (academical) research.

Thank you for the much more constructive response, I appreciate it. I really do. Unfortunately this is not my area of expertise so thank you for the feedback. I may not be the best survey creator but my written work has consistently been at distinction level over the last 3 years. I take your point about being anonymous, the idea was to be completely transparent with regards to my lecturers so my sources couldn't be called in to question as I'm sure there are a lot of dishonest students out there who make up responses/responders to their surveys(like I say surveys aren't my strength). I personally like to do everything honestly in my approach as I'm a sucker for living my life as factually accurate as possible.

Do you have any other suggestions that may make the survey more palatable for responders? The last thing I want to do is make people feel uncomfortable.

If there's even a chance that this is a genuine academic project, your university has done nothing to guide you on getting information. Mind you, if it's true that you have only three weeks to get your dissertation finished, you're even more 'take it to the line' than I was.

Like I said, I don't understand why a supposedly genuine academic survey doesn't come with all the proper rubric I've experienced before (from UK universities). You posted on this group, which is a totally unverified and open group. How would you verify that answers were from 'qualified people' (e.g. I could complete the survey and I don't even supply video), did you even consider that people might deliberately write misleading answers (why would they? you're competition!).

The other group I'm on which has occasional student requests like this is a closed group, we had to have participated in a particular event to join (which is the reason for us being asked to participate in the research, all of us are de facto 'qualified'). The students are verified by members, e.g. 'my niece', 'my neighbour's son' or whatever. We are first of all linked to a page by the student (they can't post directly onto the group as it's closed) who introduces themselves immediately, (they don't post anonymously), explains what help they need and why, and if you want to you are then taken to the university page where it's all explained, with like I said the contact details of the director of studies etc. It's always totally anonymous from our side. There really is no reason why anyone would bother to falsify their answers, and they tend to get at least a hundred responses. Like I said, we can also follow up on their studies when they are completed.

You didn't do any of that, and think we are toxic because some of us are suspicious or less than helpful.
LOL!

Get a refund from your university.
You should have been told all this at the time you were told about the requirement to conduct a survey.
Also you should have done a dummy run of your survey to foresee problems, and I'd have expected you to have had to run the questions past your director of studies.

LOL!

I'm not going to publicly denounce my University online, I am distance learning due to several physical disabilities so I am naturally at a disadvantage as I'm not present in day to day lectures. As stated before, asking for the username would have been the qualifying information I needed to confirm the person was genuine, I have now removed this question however (see above). I have no problem sending the finished dissertation to contributors, I have answered all questions here and have been open/honest.

With regards to my timing, I work better under pressure and have consistently gained the highest grades in my class over the last 3 years by cutting it fine. I am a mature student who has previously had a successful career before going to university and am not adverse to being open about the gaps in my knowledge to improve in such areas.

Edit - To be clear, the bulk of my dissertation will be literature review but I am looking to bolster this with input from the direct experiences of established stock creators (hence the survey).

Nothing relevant to stock; and it was long enough ago that online surveys weren't an option.
My knowledge about university surveys is all derived from the surveys I've conducted via the other group - at least two Scottish and one English university was involved, probably more.

I really didn't expect this place to be such a hostile environment, there's some toxic people here but i'm glad everyone isn't like this. Thank you to the 1 genuine response iv'e had from this forum.

We might seem hostile because you are asking personal questions about private information that asks business details of what makes income and a living for some. You didn't identify yourself properly to start. People are going to be suspicious and resent prying questions. Don't call us toxic or blame us for your poor introduction and lack of transparency.

^ Amen.

Wants usernames to confirm authenticity, doesn’t feel its necessary to identify self (until heavily prodded).

Tell us who you are and what academic institution you are studying at and you might find us less so but I'm guessing you won't.

The thing is - you have no credibility. A number of people are university educated here, so know that you are full of crap.

a) You don't wait 3 weeks before your thesis is due to do a survey. A thesis usually takes 1-2 years, and this is something that would be done at the beginning. Unless this is an undergraduate course, in which case calling it a 'diseration' is not the correct term to describe what you are writing, but rather a paper.
b) Your questions are too generic to derive any meaningful data. The only one that appears somewhat detailed (perhaps disguised to hide your true intent) - is - "which stock clip sells the best and go into detail".

...
How would you verify that answers were from 'qualified people' (e.g. I could complete the survey and I don't even supply video), did you even consider that people might deliberately write misleading answers (why would they? you're competition!).
...

asking for the username would have been the qualifying information I needed to confirm the person was genuine,
I could have linked to someone else's port/given someone else's username.
I didn't, and wouldn't; but could've.

I suspect all your points are well made.  8) But I hear the best wool comes from the UK, so maybe the best wool pulling does too?

Just an FYI... dissertation is the correct term for a final year paper in the UK.
