Title: Selling 4k footage
Post by: alech on February 26, 2015, 11:30
Hello, I sell stock for a long time, I wanted to try to sell even stock footage, I want to do things right from the start too, shoot video in 4k or not? Do the 4k footage sell right now?

Thank You

Alessandro

4k is not in big demand, but many agencies are requesting it or at least accept it. If you are just starting video i would shoot 4k as it is going to be the next 1080p. The price is also high for 4k but I expect that to come down over time as agencies screw us harder and it becomes more in demand. I think most agencies automatically downsize to 1080p, which is nice. I will be moving to 4k soon in prep for the future.

And careful : not all agencies willing to sell, but they use your work for their benefits. I received an e-mail from BigStock yesterday : inviting to join for 7 days of FREE downloads. "Download 100% royalty-free videos"

Yea that is a messy deal over at Bigstock. When stock video collapses, they will be the agency who started it.

If I were to render animations in 4K resolution, which pixel resolution should I ideally use, actual 4k (4096x2160) or Ultra HD (3840x2160)?

i suggest doing more research like pond5s keyword request list. a lot of 4k with it squeaky  clean res just does not fit well as b roll clips with most buyers. hell, i can't watch that stuff unless some kind of landscape shots. get your chops sorted with 1080 first. also 4k is massive size so uploads will slow your life down

You could do 4096X2304.This is 16:9 AR and is a more realistic choise given that whoever buys it can choose to crop it to 1:9 AR to match a cinema camera project, or any other AR for that matter down to 2:35.
Stock footage (propably) mostly lives as 16:9 and i suspect that at this point 2304p clips are mostly bought to be cropped or post zoomed for effect, or in some cases -depending on the frame and subject- be used like multiple shots in 16:9 projects, so that's where i would start.
In fact that's what i do personally and there has been positive feedback so i guess that works for me.

Thanks, I've decided to follow your advice on this.
