Title: Too many contributors?
Post by: KB on November 11, 2014, 11:53
I'm constantly seeing posts from people deciding they're going to start uploading video clips. I think it won't be too long before the popular areas are well over-saturated with clips (considering the demand is so much less than for photos).

I've been trying to log on to P5's FTP server this morning, but so far it's been futile:
[R1] 421 400 users (the maximum) are already logged in, sorry

Ha!

(Re-formatted to make message more clear)

I don't believe those  421 400 are all video contributors uploading at the same time

my understanding is that 421 is an FTP error code meaning too many users

and 400 is the number of users logged in - still many, but more reasonable;
and photographers are included as well

you may also try one of their other FTP servers:
ftp2.pond5.com
ftp3.pond5.com
ftp4.pond5.com

Yes, mystock has it right; sorry I didn't mean to mislead anyone. But I thought 400 contributors logged in at once was quite a few! But you're right, that does include photographers, too (forgot about that).

Thanks, mystock. I didn't realize there were other P5 ftp servers available. That's great to know!

KB, Although I still think you're right about the number of video clips being uploaded. It will saturate, then it will re-saturate in 4k, and then in 8k, and then in 32k 3D...

Video is already mirroring still behaviors. One example of over saturation is beach videos.  They are like isolated tomatoes on white. Beaches are easy to access for many, simple to shoot and everyone thinks their stuff is the best.  A lot of what I am seeing as successful video is combining real video and graphic elements. And GOOD CG is really successful (like illustrations) but not a lot of people can do CG video really well. Very impressive stuff out there but I agree with KB that categories are already becoming saturated. You really need to take image production experience and bake what works into video and refrain from the me too inventories.

i gave up on P5 uploads for ftp and web. Just ordered a portable  hard drive (2TB) and will mail my large shoots to them. Exporting to ProRes422 so the files can get large. Don't want to bog down my system while trying to UL clips.

And there are a lot of files online but like photos, 80% are poor quality so saturation is not really a factor. I think many of shooters are coming from stills using their DSLRs to shoot video with varied success. The pros or those heavily invested with quality equipment seem to be the top sellers.
