Title: Vertical video anyone?
Post by: georgep7 on January 31, 2019, 04:57
Lesson learned! Did a search before posting :D
...hope i will not double post the subject!

Do you invest time on vertical video?
It seems quite easy if the subject shape helps to make
both portrait and landscape clips.
But does it wortn it?

By your experience, do vertical sell?
I was thinking somethimng like IGTV possible buyers,
searching in agencies for vertical stock but I don't know.

:)

Edit: Youtube now on also accept and show vertical clips as native format.

I was wondering the other day about it, the major agencies allow to upload in vertical? I think its interesting for showing a natural shots taken from the phone, and to some footage in that they want to do exclusive for smartphone or some parts that transmits the naturallity from recording in smartphone....

Pond5 does for sure. It accepted a sample. Both titled, keyworded as so and the thumbnail also indicated a portrait shoot. I have searched as customer and yes some exist.

The question is, it is an empty market speaking for video.
Does it worth the time as eg in IGTV example people shoot by themselves
And in commercial work I see minimal requests for vertical work.

But I don't have the whole picture, just a minimal part, this is why I asked :)

Also, as a question will dedicated vertical video sell?

As long as customers can always buy and crop already offered landscape files...

tried one with ss it was refused...pond accept?
when you do video in vertical what you have to do in Final Cut? just process normally nd   sport without any change of format?
i think it can be a good niche.

Actually, while shooting a pile of office (like) folders, I couldn't fill the frame with a clean white background. Flipped the camera on the tripod 90 degrees in portrait like shooting position and re-recorded while stacking them. So no post process other than color correction and trimming. And in thumhnail it was obvious that it is a vertical video. No folders stand on air by themselves! :)

Adobe declined due to technical error (but they kill 85% of what (identical to P5 and SS) upload)

SS that you mention accepted. Just for reference it is clip-1022909752

I have a some vertical videos and they have occasionally sold, but it's pretty rare. I would not go out of my way to shoot them, but if you have something that works as a vertical and it's not too much trouble to shoot, maybe try it.

Adobe rejects all vertical videos.

What about diagonal video?
Sorry, I don't mean to take the piss, I am actually interested in this thread, as I used to think that video is landscape only, but if there is really a market for vertical video I am interested.
I just could not stop the joke

I specialize in upside down video.

I suffered from serious headaches for years before I realized I could just flip the clips in post.

Love jokes or teasing! No problem! But if this is a new field? Vergin land of opportunity.

I got used to always work in 16:9 and crop accordingly, but as I said I don't have the whole picture.
People editing on their phones, uploading to IGTV or social media, do, record and edit vertical (portrait mode).
EDIT: thus, they lead the market to vertical as long as their preferences are "recorded" and create the "mainstream".
I have seen some brand requests and final products vertical, but is this enough to start producing vertical content?

If rules on third party images/videos getting more strict (ok, another subject)
will people start producing or buying more of our work?

With those vertical video phone / tablet editors and low "packet" prices offered from agencies,
perhaps there is an opportunity. (Already Pond 5 have this "Social Studio" right?)
EDIT: check description on SS Client Android app in Store: "clips images only available for phone" (well, not sure if true...)

With all those brands trying to enter social media, and be trendy by using "vertical" ads
targeting social media audiences or even Youtube phone users, perhaps there is an opportunity.
I mean for higher quality clips targeting to those brands. (Sorry, my English are so and so...)

@Brightontl your guides in Youtube are cool and useful (thanks for your efforts!) (offtopic)

@increasingdifficulty there is worse headache than this.
Switching from a production house with Premiere to another
using FCXP for the first time. Mechanically hitting keyboard
shortcuts that did nothing or worse, messed everything!
:D

I don't think there's a point in shooting vertical unless this has meaning for the shot.

Since vertical is to be used on phones, HD quality is more than enough. By purchasing 4K horizontal standard videos, buyers can easily crop them vertically and get a HD standard format.

I don't know, but computers which is what most of the video is used on, is landscape. If there was a site that ran columns like magazines or newspapers, Portrait might have a use.

I would imagine that vertical or Portrait composition for video demand is severely limited, but I wouldn't say a dead product.

Personally I try to hit at the target and center of any market for the most stock/stock. But I also really like specific specialty subjects, aiming at holes and lower competition. So if that's your idea to fill a niche with vertical video, why not try and see?

Good point @NotToday

I will do! @UnclePete Not as a niche but as a supplement to landscape oriented ones whenever applicable :)

It makes sense with so many ads popping up for smartphones.  I've shot a few vertical videos but no sales yet.  I think demand will increase though.

I'm personally very interested in this question and while I have an opinion, what I'd really like to know is if anyone has invested the time and energy into vertical video and seen success.

As a long time veteran of stereoscopic 3d (Avatar), I know that some things sound like the future but don't end up realizing their potential.

is vertical video the next thing or merely a hot idea that people are talking about at the moment?

Thanks,
Dennis

@Dennis Radeke,

there is a market for sure but outside stock video
I mean brand requests even in open to all freelancing sites.
Are they beta testing? Are they going low price?
Don't know.

But even in work or from what i have seen on internet,
requests are extremely specific, kind on demand
"Rotating product", "pesron holding product" etc.

There is a great amount of products that can be presented
n portrait mode due to their shape as a beer for example.
Silly example, but guess you got the point, no pricey shots,
just studio work, less graphics due to limited "dead space" etc.

People and brands as everyone want the best price, and less effort
Will they buy a native well framed vertical HD
vs
a most expensive 4K that need post process as cropping?
(Assuming both clips give the same final output.)

Dennis, Are you referring to 3D video for Anaglyph viewing, say Red/Blue or something much more complicated like the full color movie Avatar? Is there any market in stock for 3D video, either type, or stills, that requires colored glasses to view?

Back on topic I hope some people experiment with vertical video and see what happens.

I was referring to 3d as an example of a mostly failed attempt for something to latch on to.  Will vertical video be the same or break out as a successful content type?  That's what I was after.

Hope this helps,
Dennis
