Title: Who is doing 2D animations?
Post by: Jeffrey on October 27, 2020, 04:40
Who is into 2D animation? How many animation videos do you have? Are you earning regularly?

I just need inspiration if you guys are doing good with animation. I currently have 16 videos, and 8 of them are animations. I have had these videos since 2016. I halted my animation uploads, because I lack the motivation because it's still not earning a single cent.

I only tried it for fun, I did 2 of them, one of them sold once on Adobe. I am also curious about other people's experience. I guess it depends a lot on the topic / quality as with photos or illustrations.

Only two animations and you sold one. I guess you should upload more.

I guess the animation is the Merry Christmas text? What software did you use?

I know how to do them my self. But I've only uploaded some pretty simple ones, since I don't have the right graphics and probably sound card for more elaborate animations.

Then again I never bothered to make any more or upload simple animations to SS since they really weren't profitable for me any how. Probably most stock places want more elaborate looking ones anyways.

Free or cheep software is not too much of a problem to find. Set up is no problem these days either. Fairly easy to put together yourself.  :)

Actually the one sold was the other one with the sweet dreams. I used a really old Adobe Flash (I wrote the text, deleted parts frame by frame, reversed the frames and exported to JPGs, imported to PS and exported the movie). It's quite a lot of work, I would only do more if I had a better computer and some more advanced program for this. But since shutterstock's move, I don't see that happening any time soon :).
Can I see your animations somewhere?

Can you recommend a free software that can create animations suitable for stock? I would give it another try if I find the right tools. Thanks!

DaVinci Resolve free has Fusion, node compositor, but you can do some nice mograph animation with it.
Blender, mainly for 3d but you can use it also for flat 2d or isometric style animations.
HitFilm express, free.
Borix fx particle illusion standalone, free
Unreal Engine, not so easy to use, free

But bear in mind that you are competing with artists that use expensive softwares and plugins to produce very high quality animations.
Honestly i don't know if it's worth the time, but if it's your hobby i think that at least you can have a lot of fun with these softwares :)

I do a lot of different kinds of animated stock videos, from cartoon characters to motion graphics (particle effects) and 3D backgrounds or semi-3D animations (like earth/planet/moon stuff). I mostly use Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and sometimes 3DMax or Cinema4D.
It sells slower than illustrations but the RPD is often much better. However, I'm still just a small fish with 500+ animations.

You do need bigger volume to gain any tractions (and good quality content). Simple text animations (writing effect) hardly sell, it's needs to be unique and high quality.

I use mostly Synfig in my animations, it's free, I also made a few with Photoshop. Photoshop is much easier to use.

Then there's https://digicel.net/ (https://digicel.net/) Not free but usable.
