I made this drawing of an old steam engine. Don't worry about acceptance, why I'd want to make this a vector, marketing or any of that, just the question please.  :)

Large version available if needed. http://s5.postimg.org/ujyfftmjr/old_steam_locomotive.jpg

It's a JPG scan of the original drawing. It's black and white. It has no fine lines that need to be resolved. I could also have done a better resolution TIFF, I just did this one at 600dpi for an example so I could ask for advise.

How do I convert it into an EPS 10 Vector?

I have Illustrator. I have done some autotrace but when I get done, I'm not sure I have a "real" EPS 10.

I've used raster2vect converter and I don't think it makes suitable finished products. Done at 1 pixel B&W. It comes out with a vector and I can make it into an EPS 10 but it's small and when I open and look, it seems to have vasterized, squiggly, vector lines?

Place into Illustrator, live trace, black and white, play with the values until you get something you like, expand, use the magic wand to select the black and "cut," then select all and "delete," then "paste" and only the black portion will come back (I find that's easiest).

You may have to do object>path>simplify after you expand and play with those values as well, because it looks like you'll have a lot of jagged edges and a potentially large file size. Then save down to EPS 10.

This is assuming you'll be working in Illustrator.

Wow and thanks. I obviously do not know Illustrator and I have CS3 (or 4?) on some computer, "somewhere".

But that's what I needed to know. I was just autotracing and saving, never did any of the other steps and it should be easy because it's only B&W and has no gradients or shades. That's what was confusing me. (I was a cat in another life...)

Also I appreciate the advise to simplify as well to clean it up, just in case.

Maybe Monday. Have to unload the van and shuffle storage, three day weekend ahead. (I mean who else gets paid to listen to football on the radio?)  ;)

Could a person make an Action that would do this? Person meaning me, not asking someone else to do that) So I could for example, automate parts of this?

I'll do a test of the same when I can, maybe tonight if I have time, and Upload it to my Dropbox, maybe you can look and see if I got it right and have a "real" EPS10 Vector.
