Title: Illustrators? Where are you?
Post by: sweetgirll on September 14, 2010, 11:50
Hi,
I know this list is mainly for photographers, but
I'm wondering here, how many illustrators are here and
what type of illustration category they prefer.

- vector graphic elements, vector cartoons etc
- 3D
- bitmap illustration (digital painting)

I mainly do vectors (I've done some photography).  Haven't tried doing digital painting or 3d renders eventhough I have the programs to do them both.

Its not mainly for photographers - its just that some of us are a little self-centered and occasionally forget that there are other talented contributors out there that are sometimes less vocal.

Photography is probably the more traditional part of the stock industry, but other contributors - illustrators, videographers, sound artists etc. are very welcome here, as is anyone else who has an interest in the industry!

Quite right.  We are a collective of 'stock artists'  :)

I tend to produce more photographs than illustrations, but I do both.  For illustrations I work in bitmaps at the moment, but will get on to Vectors once I've had time to read my 'Illustrator for Dummies' book, which has been in front of me on the desk for about two months now... unopened   :-[ :D

Once you turn the pages, you may never turn back.

I started out in microstock in 2005 by submitting photos and 3D renders to IS (may they rest in peace), and then I got into Illustrator and did only vectors for a long time. Now I'm getting back into doing a lot of 3D too.

I have preferred doing non computer generated illustrations such as drawings and watercolor paintings and then photographing or scanning into bitmap. Then enhancing by computer.
Would like to create vectors someday.
Lately have been more into photography.

Of the illustrators here, does anyone sell at both micro and macro?  Have you had a good experience with selling at macrostocks ?

I have some good success with raster illustrations on Alamy.

I'm guessing you don't have your micro-images for sale at Alamy then ?

I was once adviced to upload other images if I wanted to start contributing to Alamy. What is the general opinion on this?

I have other images on Alamy, yes. Images that I consider better quality and illustrations that took too long to make and that are too special for selling them on micro.

Do you think I am right in my assumption that most Alamy contributors do like you?
Is it even allowed to sell the same images on the micros?
Personally I think it's unethical unless the license is substantially different than on the micros. (But I'd probably consider it if everybody did it) :)
