Title: Something in the news about legal and lawyers
Post by: Uncle Pete on October 15, 2019, 09:38
Good reading

https://blog.ericgoldman.org/archives/2019/10/copyright-troll-lawyer-gets-sanctioned-again-sands-v-bauer-media.htm

"While the defendant in this case might have opted-out of the proposed new copyright small claims court in the CASE Act, this lawsuit is a nice reminder of how photographers and their lawyers are going to FEAST on any new small claims option. Among other things, the CASE Act proposes a brand-new statutory damages of up to $7,500 for works that were NOT registered on a timely basis. The availability of those statutory damages, plus the high risk of problems with service of process, will make the proposed small claims option into a troll Mecca. Please please please read the CASE Act and speak out if you’re as troubled as I am. "

Troll Mecca, so that's holding up protecting our rights and work?

On Tuesday, Allen was at the U.S. Supreme Court as his lawyers argued that Allen and Nautilus Productions should be able to sue the state of North Carolina for copyright infringement.

“If I win, this is going to make a big difference for an awful lot of people, like other artists, other composers, writers, software developers. We don’t have a way to handle copyright infringement by states right now. If I do well, then we will all have a way to address that in the courts.”
