Anyone ever do this before? Sounds like a fun way to burn out my retinas or melt my camera.

I read the title.  It doesn't say "Photographing the Eclipse" or anything similar.

Well to be fair, an eclipse is unlikely to melt your camera if the question was "anybody watched this on tv before". It's not too far of a stretch of the imagination to assume he might have been referring to pointing his camera at the sun, and doing so during the eclipse. He didn't say which eclipse either, but I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say it's not the one in 2024.

I took pics of the 1999 eclipse in Hungary.  Don't recall exactly what I did - I think I probably used projection to line it up roughly, then did final adjustments when it went total... be careful to avoid eye damage.  Certainly didn't do the camera (an Olympus OM-4Ti) any harm.

I had a telescope giving me a larger projection too, so I could see what was going on.

That was on film of course.  Worked out OK - it's even sold as stock a number of times - though not as sharp as I would have liked.
