Title: Account Privileges locked at iStock?
Post by: Talshiar on April 07, 2011, 10:56
Got this message the other day...with no other explanation other than I can't log into my account.

The administration team at iStockphoto has locked your account privileges.  Comments from iStockphoto Administrators (if any):

Your account is currently under review, you will be contacted shortly.

Best Regards,

I've tried contacting them for an explanation with no response as of yet. iStock is 50% of my MS income so I am pissed and depressed. As much as I might dislike them as a company I'm going to miss that income.

Anyone else have experience with this kind of BS?

I haven't had that problem, but don't they do that when they feel there is copyright infringement? Have they said anything else about that or did you make someone mad in the forum?

I had it once but received a Mail by an individual iStock employee about half an hour later explaining the issue and asking for my feedback. The issue in my case was that there were sales happening from the same IP I was uploading from. This was rather easily explained being a large agency with one shared IP address and half a day later my Account was reopened. Good Luck to you!

Can you ring them on their freephone line? Talk to someone and find out what is going on

that is what I was going to suggest.  especially if your portfolio has been made unavailable for buyers -- though I'm not sure it has as you didnt indicate that?

Thanks everyone...I'll try calling tomorrow.

I'm racking my brain for a reason that they might do this. I've had illustrations rejected at times for various technical reasons but not for copyright infringement. Once I had a smartphone illustration that looked too much like an iphone but that never made it through the review process.

Hopefully it's a misunderstanding.

Yes, my portfolio is unavailable. :'(

You'd probably be better off ringing them. You're in good company though, it appears Russell Tate is currently suspended too.

That just doesn't make sense....I hope you find out what is going on..let us know if you find anything out. Hopefully they won't give you the runaround.

About a year ago, give or take, I posted a message in the IS forum that was mildly critical of how bulky and time-consuming the upload and keywording process is there (I only have video clips on that particular site).  Shortly afterward, I received a message telling me that they will no longer accept submissions from me.  Something about they didn't think my work was progressing / developing like they thought it should..., blah, blah, blah.  The material that was already in my catalog is still available and continues to sell, and I still have access to my account.  I thought about trying to get in as a still photographer, but subsequent events such as restructuring and commission reductions have led me to believe that it would be a waste of time.  I find it rather amazing that a critical post in the forum would result in being banned from uploading.  I recommend that current contributors avoid it, and post complaints here on MSG instead.

Wow, in all the years I've been on iStock I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting such a message, especially after a critical post. Maybe I haven't been hanging out in this forum though long enough to know of other instances. Unbelievable given the fact I've seen far worse posts in the iStock forums than what you said you wrote.

Possibly the two events were unrelated and just coincidence?

I've never heard of anyone getting that message before. I and several others here are LOBOtomised from the forums, but not from uploading there. Loads of people have complained here and there about the video upload process, and about the time taken for inspections.
Weird.

I imagine the two things were entirely coincidental, and I think it's a long stretch to suggest a connection. otherwise I can think of many of people who would have also been banned over the years for posting FAR worse comments.

Of course, completely coincidental. They have safeguards in place to make sure that they are fair to their contributors.

There are much worse video portfolios on istock, with lower sales.  So why don't others get similar treatment?

Did you get a chance to get any further information on this on Friday as planned? We are all hoping for a positive outcome for you on this and would be relieved to hear confirmation that it was just a misunderstanding. Best wishes.
