You keep receiving your exclusive royalties for the 30 days until your crown disappears, when the crown goes so do the higher royalties

If they want to keep paying you your exclusive rate after the thirty days, even though you've given notice and the time is up, that's yours to enjoy, while uploading elsewhere.

After waiting 30 day, today time is up for me. but they forget to take my crown also.

I would wait until day 31 to start activating at other sites.  just to cover your backside.  :)

congrats on taking the plunge to independence!

i dont think its a bold move.
Because of so much unknown thing in istock, staying there seams to bold move.
i will try to share my learnings :)

Well, I have 30 days to go, but I have just canceled exclusivity. Don't think any explanations of why are needed :)

Now I'm working on how much uploading I can get done in the next 30 days to be ready for my return to independence. The income will take a hit in the short term, but as noted above, it's taking a hit in the short term anyway!

Yay! I know you have been contemplating it for a while. It will be good to have you back to the indie side! One plus for you is that you already know the ins and outs of the sites.

I do understand why you are giving up the crown, but I am still sad at what has happened to IS and how it is affecting a lot of contributors.

Nice to have you back on 'the dark side' again JoAnn. Brave move but sooner is always going to be better than later. Best of luck with it. I think you'll be particularly impressed with sales at SS as your portfolio becomes established.

Very smart move JoAnn.  So sorry it has come to this :(

Another suggestion - if you haven't already, be sure your images uploaded since you went exclusive are keyworded appropriately for the other sites that don't use CV.

Wow, Joanne, you're like a double-triple agent now or something.  Sorry it came to that.

Welcome to the dark light lobo free side.  ;D

Wonder if anyone will let you reactivate old images?

I am very sorry to see this!

I dont blame you though. RC levels still havent been announced, lots of unresolved site issues, simple searches that return over 90% v/a in the first 1000 images, if you click "no people" you still get Hulton archive or V/A images with people in them,  and the biggest problem: very little communication or guidance from our agent.

If the next monthly sales thread are simlilar to April, there will be many more exclusives leaving. If they really want V/A to be the new essence of istock and attract mostly photographers who prefer fewer sales for more money, then many in the "middle tier" will have to decide what they want to do. Move up or move out, seems to be the message.

I still hope they come round or that somehwere down the road there really is a solid marketing plan that will bring millions of new buyers. The market is there, they just have to go after it.

i've dropped my crown a month ago for vectors, and i know it's for the better! it looks to me that i am getting slightly better sales now since my vectors are cheaper, but i am looking forward to seeing my images actually move as sales at istock were starting to feel like water torture
it seems that istock doesn't care to lose exclusives, as it is in line with their greedy ways to to push for more profit, this way they are taking a bigger piece of the pie..but i think the market will shift to sites with better reputation and prices
i have no attachment to IS anymore-and i actually feel inspired again to create now that my creations won't be swallowed by a hungry fierce beast;
it will still be a beast of microstock, but this way it's more like a zoo where i can choose which beast to feed, whilst exclusivity was feeling like you are locked with the biggest monster in their cage  :D :P

Nice thought, but other than SS (where I have about 600 images I didn't delete but just opted out) no. I also have a large number of images that were never on the other sites (from August 2008 through now), and I'm going to focus on those first anyway.

I am sad that things at IS have disintegrated to the extent they have - at least for contributors like me. I think it's possible that there's a tier or two of people who will still do fine as exclusive, but close to certain that doesn't include me. Given what a wonderful year 2010 was for earnings - even with the mess of F5 - I just kept hoping...

And looking at the bright side, there are a bunch of things I can do for other sites that IS wouldn't want for its collection, so it'll be fun to be able to pursue those avenues again.

And if Getty buys Shutterstock, Stockfresh, etc. etc. I'll end up in the insane asylum!!

JoAnne!
Best of luck and sorry it had to come to this but its a smart move. You cant go wrong. Dont worry, nobody is going to buy Shutterstock,  if anything John Oringer would probably buy them. As Lisa says, be careful with the keywording and at some sites you can use lots more conceptual keywords then what the Getty CV allowed.

Find it very hard to believe they are still acting in ignorance when premiere members like yourself are leaving the crown? must say in 20 years of stock shooting I have never experienced this sort of arrogance against members?

best

Good luck with your new non-exclusivity JoAnn. I'm teetering, undecided on the edge myself, and if I had your experience of the big bad stock world "out there" I'd probably already have jumped.
