Here ye! Here ye! According to Lobo, the phrase "+1" is now banned in the iStock forums, and all instances of +1 have been deleted.

Are you kidding me? Do they not have better things to do than treat their contributors and buyers like children on a playground? iStock is already notorious for having a heavy hand in their forums and locking down threads, but this really does take the cake. It really is like treating us like a group of pre-school kids, not to mention it just smacks of micromanagement at its absolute worst. If this is any indication of how they treat their employees, it's no wonder the site is having the problems is does. Un-f*ing-believable.

I think I need to go vomit now.

unfortunately, some of the people complaining about the +1 are those who REALLY just want one-sided freedom to say what they want. so, what those peple are truly asking for is for management to sit back and let people deride the company, belittle and misquote one another while high-fiving those in the 'clique' with +1s. and actually, they'll still let you deride the company...as long as it's with words instead of +1.

comparisons to North Korea in particular are just plain silly. AFAIK, North Koreans don't have an open, international forum on which they can bash . out of one another and their government at will. the +1 thing was not about gagging IMO, it was about restoring some courtesy and discussion to threads being overrun by playground antics. their forum, their rules.

I already made my point of view in the IS thread, and was greeted with snarky replies from Mr. Ban Hammer. His playground his rules, but I think they want to cut the negative chatter.

The point they're missing is that they do that by (a) getting the site functional and (b) treating contributors fairly and reasonable. With respect would be nice too. In the absence of those, they can get silence with a few woo yays sprinkled in.

This is my thread, and I don't like that word, so I'm going to ban the word "ditto" from this thread henceforth.  Don't let it happen again.   ;)

Cutting the negative chatter is understandable. Banning +1 as a response is insane.

Well, at some point they might be able to accomplish (a), but I seriously don't see (b) ever happening. And yes, all they want to see in the forums are woo-yays.

JoAnn, no one was asked to be only positive. and your comments directed at Lobo are still in the thread. the only thing asked was that contributors refrain from using +1. I'm fairly certain you're still free to be as negative as you would like.

Stupid ban. +1 is like a vote. Maybe it's pointless quoting a long post and adding +1, but a snip and agreement is totally in order.

Uh no. You're not. Negative comments get deleted and people get banned.

that's simply not true. rude, incoherent and baiting comments get banned....but in general, the negativity that they still allow in the threads surprises me. especially comapred to what happens to contributors at other agencies who would dare to say things like that, even off site.

Or the more conventional "Me2"

People will just find an alternate way to say "+1".  Funny though, if the "+1" was replaced with a hearty "Woo Yay", would they be forced to ban that phrase?

Personally I found the +1 posts irritating and pointless. If you agree with a post, then articulate your agreement and actually add something to the conversation. I honestly think that trying to paint this as some kind of opression is really stretching things.

Irritating or not, does it really warrant an outright ban and an entire thread devoted to the subject? C'mon.

From Lobo's post :
"repeat offenders of the "+1" will be warned directly but if you become an annoyance I will just revoke your privileges for a while to see if that works. Don't make me have to do that"

That's a little different to just saying it's an "outright ban" . So how else would he advise people that there is a change in policy & +1'ers are no longer wanted other than starting a thread about it?

ETA : there are a lot of things that I'm not happy about, and things that would be done better. I'm just saying that chosing this as your battle is pushing it. People are pissed off with iStock, yeah. But conspiracy theories can only be stretched so far. I'd save it for something more worth while.

Its been a bitch/rant fest on istock and here on msg since the sept announcement. Understandably so, but some people just go out of their way to repeat the same things over and over again to the point it gets irritating to sift through.

And if istock was my company, i would limit negative comments regarding the company myself on my forum too.

K... bitch/rant on

exactly what I was thinking. But really, these sorts of things keep people connected, even if they only add a "+1" or "woo-yay" to the thread, they are contributing and making their opinion known.  It's part of the community.  Agree or disagree or +1 or -1 -- doesn't matter, by banning the use of that it is just one more nail in the coffin of what once was the great the istock community - the thing that built iStock and the (in my opinion) biggest thing that made iStock stand out among the competition (at least for most contributors).  there was a time when everyone (well, most) wanted to be a part of that great community.  sadly, that's not so much the case anymore as there really isn't much of that spirit left.

Seriously? For starters, how about not changing the policy at all and focusing instead on the bigger rocks that need to be tended to?

if you really must ban things, please let it be the "I love you iStock" iStock Rocks" etc. and other such comments.
