Some time in the next 24 hours Yuri will become istock's number 2 seller. In all fairness Amanda has been busy with other things lately, but yuri's progress on istock has been pretty phenomenal, given the restrictions on non-exclusives there.

It is pretty amazing that an independent (non-exclusive) can attain such a high level.

Great for him, but maybe it's no fair compare him with hidesy, that works on her own. As he often explains, Yuri works with a team of five, or seven, or I don't-know how many people team. That's ok, but it's a production force, not just an individual contributor. They play in another league.

Sure yuri has a significant team, but I wonder how many of the top players work entirely on their own. I know Lise's partner assists her very actively, she probaby use MUAs and maybe stylists. Not sure about hidesy, but I suspect the reality is that yuri simply has a bigger team.

I think that's what sjlocke is always saying. So true. I couldn't catch him no matter what.

I don't know how Lisa works (I think she has a blog where she talks about it) but, do you really compare a now and then little help from your couple, or hiring a make-up or a stylist for a particular session with a pre-production, production and post-production professional payed team???

As a lot of Lise's portfolio is pics of herself and/or her partner, and I've heard other people describe their way of operating (at istockalypses) as being very much a team effort, my answer to that is yes. I think you're underestimating the value of such collaboration.

And I think amanda said in that article about her mentioned here recently that she now hires her husband as her business manager.

He's done it.

Congrats to Yuri! He might have a team helping him now but he has set out to be the most successful microstock photographer and done what has needed to be done. No-one should gripe that he has a team behind him - he just raised the bar to a level that we can't match - would love to but I am just not that driven.

Don't think he's going to get a lot of love on the iStock thread so better give it out here! We love you Yuri!

You've hit a couple of nails on the head here. Seems to me that istock is becoming a bit of a cult, using its community (always its strength) to encourage people to become exclusive. So yuri won't get much love there, as someone who is independent of the hive. Also, I find it instructive to look at his portfolio on istock, sorted by age, and look at the last pages (his first images) first. He started off about where most of us are. Pretty ordinary stuff. If he now has a successful team, it's because he built it. Why don't others who whine about his 'team' do the same and become equally productive?

What I find even more interesting is that he's actually going to be making more at fotolia than at istock now. One would have to wonder if some of the top exclusives decided to submit to other agencies, how much would their income rise?

Yuri is more than a excellent photographer. He's a businessman and a great one at that! He built his company from the ground up. He's probably the only one that had this vision and the guts to pull it off in the micros.

As an ex-company owner (roughly 12 employees under my care) I'm looking forward to meeting him one day and giving him a good old fashion HIGH-5! :)

Have you guys pondered the amount of residual income this guy's gonna make if he calls it quits?  8)

If I were 25 again, I'd be following in his footsteps for sure!

Keep it yup Yuri! You rock man!  ;D

PS: As for Istock... the admins must love him.... he's their top money making machine!  ;)

That's not hard actually. A few months back I turned Emerald at FT and upped my images to $2. I now make roughly 40% more at FT than at IS!

I think the interesting thing is there are different ways to form a successful business model in stock. I never hire much or get very big because every time I start making money I take a bunch of time off. Doesn't do much for the success thing but I sure like the lifestyle. It's hard to beat. I took a full year off a year ago and most summers for the previous 5 years.

Good point. For me, stock photography is what I do when I don't have any other photography work on my plate. As it is, those times are quite rare (phew!) so I don't pretend that I can compete with the big boys of Yuri, Andres etc etc. So success for me is measured by the fact that I can take a couple of weeks off here and there and I still have a pretty decent income. I know that the rent and car payments will be covered and for me, that is pretty cool. So like you Zeus, this is a lifestyle thing rather than pure business. I've never been that way inclined and never will be.

Very sensible. At the end of the day "success" for me can be measured in achieving what you want to achieve and being free to live the life you like. And I say this even if I'm an extremely ambitious individual. Maybe even too much.
