Looking at my remittance email I just got, I noticed some data on the bottom.  At first, I assumed it was related to my overall payments from iStock over the years.  But when I looked closer, I noticed the total was over 5.6 million (I assume dollars) -- and that's not all mine.

Do you think that's how much money they're paying everyone this pay period?  Was this information on previous payment emails and I just never noticed it?

Sounds like you are owed $5+ million dollars! Congrats!

Just kidding :) Yeah, sounds like they made a mistake, surprised they disclosed that. Probably not just to you, but everyone with an iStock account.

And they are keeping 70-85% of that, wow

I wish!  Only about 0.00024% of that amount is mine.  :(

Yeah, I have the same figures, and I don't see it on previous remittance advice notes.

Very revealing. Greedy b*stards.

If that's total monthly revenue then they're doing $60M a year in sales. If that's the 15%-ish royalty cut then they're doing over $400M a year in sales (?)

It's a lot of money and still hurting their contributors

No big secrets here.
Here is graph, showing these values for SS, for every year between 2004-2016:

https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/2017-infographic-contributor-earnings-payouts-report

But SS is publishing all this info (and more) every quarter and every year. The report for 2018 will be published on 02/26.

So does this mean that Shutterstock is already paying out twice as much as gettyimages?

Interesting to see that European photographers make A LOT more than the American (Canada + North + Central + South).

Well I would guess SS is at least selling the same number of images on around half the commission so sounds in the right ball park

As a group....unless we have access to how many contributors we don't know individually. My reading is if the African continent starts to enter this market big time  we are in trouble.

Of course, but the population of the Americas is 1 billion, compared to Europe's 741 million.

That means Europeans effectively make about 8-9 times more. Quite an enormous difference don't you think? Even without knowing the number of actual contributors.

Yes so enormous I find it quite implausible. Therefore I would like to know a lot more about whats behind the numbers to reach that conclusion. I believe some of the Big "Image factories" are located in Eastern Europe so maybe that skews the results? I doubt that comparing like with like contributors would show that magnitude of difference. (Being European I wish it did ;-))

Total active artists with over 1,000 images is around 18,000

Partial because not all artists have countries listed:

Thailand      2567
Russian Federation   2122
Ukraine      1857
United States      818
Italy         367
Belarus         346
United Kingdom   344
Spain         301

Someone else posted this last year and I got an email with the same numbers, so I saved it.  :) But comparing the US population to UK is an interesting idea.

This looks like the PayPal batch. I received the Payoneer batch with very different numbers.

Ah, so the PayPal total was only part of the total.
More and more interesting.  ::)
