Amidst all the mounting site errors over the last 6-8 months, do you ever wonder if sales go missing at times and don't register in our accounts? We would never know. The only errors we know about are the ones we can see. A truly scary thought.

I was also thinking about how we all are sitting here beside ourselves at the moment scratching our heads wondering how such a huge sucessful company can be left to dwindle in limbo and hurting income for both themselves and their suppliers. It seems unfathonable, but yet if you think about it this kind of thing happens in the big corporate world all the time. There is a buyout, merger, or take over and the new admis end up being so inept at running a business they know nothing about that they end up driving the company into the ground within 2 years.

Taking a few steps back from it all, things are kind of starting to look a bit that way.

That's very much my take on it too.  It happened to a company I worked for, and I see echoes of that all over this.  What I don't understand is why those that do understand what has made it work didn't succeed in explaining this well enough to the new owners to stop them screwing around with a winning formula.

I'm a great believer in the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach to life, and am very wary of 'the new broom that sweeps clean'.  So clean that there's nothing left at the end of it.

This is probably how it played out: There was a proper handover, and in fact there are still probably remnents of people within F5 that were part of the original clever group that made it a cutting edge, successful concept company. What has changed though is that those people no longer have the same decision making influence or power as before. They still give their thoughts at the internal brain storming sessions, but are overridden by decsions made by a top executive who comes from a purely a financial background and who was put in place by the new owners when they took over. So that is the reason for the repeated poor judgment decisions which appear to be only greed and bottom line driven and without any insight into how the business works. And when these bad decisions are made, the original players have to bite their lip and suck it up if they still want their paychecks every month and fat bonuses at the end of the year.

Take for example the new search engine which is ladden with errors and probably affecting buyer sales right now. Someone internally from the original team has probably suggested to take it offline until it's working properly and the answer from higher up was probably "No, dont take it offline, fix and make it work." That typical, no-nonsence, I don't want to hear any excuses approach to decision making is where the buck stops. No concern for the man on the ground and the decision maker is also not really interested in reading all the complaints from buyers and contributors. So they have no idea how bad the general sentiment is, much less care. Then we get some half hearted minimal post from someone like RM which doesn't give any definitive answers (since their hands are tied and need to keep up appearances) and internally it continues to be a mess, with bad judgement and decision making while showing signs on the outside of becoming the type of corporate disaster case study we have been discussing.

And I don't think they are done making a mess of things yet either. When the RC targets come out next week I am expecting another bad decision which ups the targets based on corporate greed which will again send shockwaves through the forums. And again, there will be little feedback from admins who are powerless and no concessions made by the decision makers and making everyone at F5 base camp look more heartless and even more greedy. Just more bad vibes.

Stay tuned for Act 3...

Sorry but I only read and write here, can you explain when the new search engine started and what's going wrong with it? An example or two would be most helpful.

Actually I think it will be a really good search engine - if only they can get it to work properly!

It seems to me that their software testing and quality control leaves a lot to be desired...  they seem to prefer to just go ahead and put it out rather than test it fully first.  But speaking as someone who used to do software development myself, that is the usual attitude of management.  They don't want to hear about problems from the engineers.

Hopefully they'll start the new year by knuckling down and getting things sorted....

If you want examples of search problems, see http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=281812&page=1 - all 30 pages of it.  But at least they're asking us to tell them!

Thanks I read the beginning where they listed the fixes and then jumped to the end where more new unpredictable and unplanned "features" are being discovered.

This does remind me, doesn't anyone try this stuff before they release it?
