Have to say I'm not very excited.  Wish they would hold off on new features until they've fixed the ones that are broken.

Lots of wooyahs however

I already uploaded two files to test the waters. I'm curious about the verdict.

Only wooyahs allowed apparently. I noticed a message disappear which asked why they were adding a new feature to an already broken site. I'm out of koolaid here.

And sensible questions aren't being asked.
I was relieved to find that two questions I had on uploading some trial pics (esp the ones about dates and location, and whether they need to be in the caption when there are distinct fields for that info) had already been asked in the Editorial forum, but six hours later haven't been answered. They should have appointed admins from different time zones to answer initial questions timeously, especially if they want us to do it right, and they want to build up a launchable collection fast, as they apparently do.
Same old, same old.  ::)

Oh, and when I apparently forgot to tick editorial at the first upload screen, I had to delete the upload and upload again.
OK, I accept it was a stupid user error, (though Usability Guru Jakob Nielsen says there are no Stupid Users!) but easily fixable on the keywording page rather than waste so much server power/time on a totally new upload when it could easily be avoided.

I think I'm missing something, as usual.
I used to have all my uploads defaulted onto 'allow ELs'.
I see this is not carried through to editorial (and see someone on the forums say not on 'general' uploads either).
Can someone give me an example, or more, of an EL use on an editorial image which I might not want? I've been forgetting to tick it (stupid user/muscle memory) and clearly if I don't tick it I could miss EL sales from big-circulation newspapers, magazines, travel guides ... (if there are many with that big a circulation, maybe in the States?)

Is there any reason you're not using Deepmeta to do this? It should make the whole process much easier...

Yes.
When I uploaded the new DM, it won't let me launch it : parameter invalid error. I tried to uninstall it via add/remove programs, but although it's now not in that list, it is in the program list and rebooting three times and switching on and off twice 9at different stages in trying to resolve it) didn't help. I've emailled Franky, but it seems to be a unique issue to me, and I'm waiting for a reply. I'm sure he's got plenty to do without wasting time on one person's unique problem!

Are you using a shortcut in the quick launch bar, created for the previous version?

I've always found that I have to delete such shortcuts and recreate to stop that error.  No idea why...

Tx.
I've never had to do that before, for any program. In the past, I've downloaded new versions of DM when opening it told me there was one, I've never gone to the site to find an update before. There was at least one previous update there that I didn't have. Anyway, it says it's "migrating thumbnail assets" ATM, which will be impressive, as it's a download/install as from new, and I haven't told it where my thumbnails or anything else are.
Oooh, well, it has. Wonder how it managed. How bewildering it is to be a total non-techie.
Now to experiment with it. I've never used DM for uploading before.

you mean to tell me you've had DM for awhile now but never used it for uploading yet?  you're going to be happy with it, I think.  It really helps reduce the time it takes to upload in batches.  and you can cut/paste, too.  very slick.

Back to the extended licenses question.
I'm in the middle of uploading an image, so out of curiosity, I clicked on the extended license option explanation link and to my surprise, the ELs there are just the same including 'items for resale'. What 'items for resale' could incorportate editorial images?
Also although I've seen it's been said that editorial files will have big red signs making it clear that their use is for editorial only, will buyers also be told that they must not manipulate these images to distort truth, even such as defacing faces or figures of people in the photos?
I'd SM RM, but he hasn't replied to my previous queries, sent the day editorial was announced. Has a 'dedicated' admin for editorial been appointed yet.

+1 and considering how long Logos took to launch. Oh, wait ...

I'll be excited when it launches and any kinks are worked out. Because you know there will be something silly to go wrong with it when it finally comes live. Alas.

Wuaaaahahaahaahaa

Seriously? If they can't even get their present situation figured out how would they be able to handle future projects?

Andrew linked to the Editorial article again in his first post in the Editorial Use Only - Uploads Open thread. In the article it says :
" All captions must include:

The date the image was taken.

The country of origin where the image was taken.

A brief but detailed description of what the image is. This description must quickly and accurately explain to anyone looking at the image who or what is in the picture, where and when the event takes place, and what exactly is going on.

Your caption only needs to be two or three sentences. In the first sentence, describe the subject of the image in the present tense, and then where and when you took the image.

In the second sentence add any additional information you have about the background on what's happening, and why it is of interest"

It seemed pretty clear to me, then, that caption' s first sentence should describe the scene, and where and when the image was taken.

You also need a shoot date for your images. You cannot seem able to submit old film scans from "circa 1980" or even "2003", you need to type the exact date.

Indeed, but it's overkill.
Most of my editorial shots are simple location shots.
Title: e.g. "Men pulling passengers in pousse-pousees, Toliara, Madagascar"
Caption: date and "Men pulling passengers in pousse-pousees (traditional wooden rickshaws), Toliara, Madagascar" Or, to follow the example, date, Toliara/Tulear, Madagascar and "Men pulling passengers in pousse-pousses"
As it's a digital image, the date is taken from the camera (ouch! I didn't change the camera date/time on my last two trips) then you choose a country of location from the dropdown.
And then there's a compulsory description field. So all I can write is 'men pulling pousse-pousses' just so that I can actually submit the images.
Note that Andrew's instructions seem to have a 'description' within the caption. I'm sure that's just bad writing, but it's all we have to go on.
Well, I guess I'll get them all flung back. But I'm sure there'll be plenty of time to redo them before launch date.

A poster of the cover of TIME magazine, for example.  There's nothing to say you can't put an editorial image on a tshirt, either I guess.  "Commercial" just tends to refer to the promotional aspects of a license.

Oh sh*t. So either we have to accept the t-shirts or anything else they could be put onto, or forego the chance of appearing in e.g. Time Magazine or a high selling Guide Book (I guess there aren't many with 1/2 million circulation, though)

I uploaded one to test the waters. A close up of a participant at a Tea Party demonstration. Interested to see if it's the same long review time and how the search engine handles a "editorial only" sort.

And here's another question.
In the article, http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=939#7 there's that photo of a sad-looking bloke looking out of a window. It's big at the top of the page and also lower down referring to captions.
It says that a good caption for that image would be:
A man and woman ride a tram on İstiklal Caddesi, a busy pedestrian shopping street leading to Taksim Square in Istanbul.
This caption is specific, to the point, and includes enough basic information to explain the image to the viewer.

I cannot for the life of me see what the point of talking about the busy pedestrian shopping street leading to the Square is in relation to that photo. You can't see the street at all. It's just a man looking out of a tram window. Fair enough to say it's in Istanbul, that would presumably explain the design of the tram, but the rest is surely totally irrelevant?
