G... almighty... what an embarrassingly unprofessional Error Page.
What's going on now?
-
Allow me to quote:
The glitch monsters are at work down in the dark internety room, but they sent a note up that said: “Dear You, Me fix broken thing. Sorry for trouble. Love, Monsters.”
They, and the site, will be back up soon. In the meantime, we’d like to offer you 10% off your next purchase of 50 or more iStock credits using the coupon code below.
-
I agree. I'll never understand why fixes aren't done on the weekend, november is the busiest month of the year (at least for me) and these are business hours still for the west coast. And when I click on the twitter link it says the page doesn't exist.
-
Yep. Anyone who didn't see the 'we thought it had been hacked' screen. Check out iStock right now.
-
this wasn't a planned take-down... this was a crash!
-

Because Istock don't work at the weekend and the office is closed.
-
So naive! I mean there are no words for this complete melt down!!!
-
this wasn't a planned take-down... this was a crash!
It says down for maintenance, that doesn't sound like a crash to me.
-
if it were a planned thing, they would have immediately put up a professionally designed Error Page... like they used to.....
sure they are going to say down for maintenance.... it would be too embarrassing to admit our site just crashed....
-

What's going on now?
They seem to have lost the CSS link.
-
I thought you were joking, but ... no.
-
>They seem to have lost the CSS link.
yes, bad path to maint-screen.css

Lobo probably fell into the spinning gears and gummed up the crankwobble.

Will you settle for "juvenile"?

“Dear You, Me fix broken thing. Sorry for trouble. Love, Monsters.”
Sheeesh.....
I now understand why istockphoto.com has had so many glitches lately... the developers are 1st graders
-
It says the glitch monsters are in the internety room; that's a crashy-washy.
It is __ and a major fucky-wucky too.
-
What are the language 'links' at the top meant to do? Nothing, as far as I can see.
-
Is Jay working on it again?
-
Screen grab it and send it to cnet for a Headline news!
-
I don´t know what to say. I seriously hope the site was hacked. I´d prefer that to what I am seeing.
The competition must be opening champagne bottles tonight.
I´m already getting the first concerned emails from other members of the German forum who can´t believe that istock would be so unprofessional.
-
They've changed it now to something marginally less toe-curling.
"Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
-
Much better.
-
On the last day of the month to, I was having solid sales today. This is such a joke, how is a site that earns millions of dollars a day unable to operate.
-
It says the glitch monsters are in the internety room; that's a crashy-washy.
It is __ and a major fucky-wucky too.
LOL
-
Much better.
Not for long. The original message is back now.
-
Well, I think istock has the last laugh...look at all the contributors who are STILL there, after YEARS of this bull$hit, and the noobs still signing up, and the contributors still choosing exclusivity. ::)
-
Well, now they're totally down, a 503 error from a server. Time to call the Coast Guard to look for survivors.
-

Nope, I had that, but then it went back to the unprofessional note from iStock. I think the Service Temporarily Unavailable message came from my iSP or the browser or something.
-
hillarious. Newbies desperate to get enough sales to go exclusive are being held back.
-
"The lack of graphics on the 503 page is being caused by the other issues we're having right now. Working as fast as we can to get back up."
You couldn't make this stuff up.
-
Thank you, IS...I didn't get enough coal in my stocking last year.
-
That is, without a doubt, the absolute worst error page I've ever seen. I seriously thought this was a joke by someone, or a hack, and had to check here to make sure.
-
Funny.
Even the error messages doesn't work.

Hands up anybody who loves it.
PS: Just realised - if they've started work writing new error messages it means they don't expect to have the site back up any time soon.

Anyone with the sense of humour of a second grader on red cordial. Maybe.
(I'm Susan1961 on twitter)
After their total inability to get their database working, this error message really made me see red.
-
Great, now they're sending people to Thinkstock on their Twitter feed…
-
"The lack of graphics on the 503 page is being caused by the other issues we're having right now. Working as fast as we can to get back up."
You couldn't make this stuff up.
As if you couldn't link from the 503 page to a logo stored on a site that's actually working. Like Flikr or something.
The page doesn't even have "iStockphoto" as a text heading. Truly beggars belief.
-
Seems they've changed it to
Thanks for visiting the 1979 version iStockphoto. We’re working to get the site back to the future as quickly as we can. In the meantime, check out the coupon code below and be sure to come back soon.
I bet they regret giving the kid from the mailroom a 50 cent raise and promotion to IT so they save a couple bucks by letting the trained programmers go.
-
Haha! They changed the message after numerous complaints about how crappy the error page looks.

This is a joke.
I truly can't believe my eyes.
Am I living in some parallel dimension now? Did I walk onto the set of Idiocracy?
-
They're offering clients 10% off their next purchase. They should give contributors some sort of retribution for the earnings we lose while the site is down, perhaps an increase of 10% royalty rate for a day...This once again shows their priority is the people who give them the money, not the ones that make them the money.

Side note...right before I refreshed the page to see if it was working yet, I was reading in the Los Angeles Times that one of the DeLoreans from "Back to the Future III" is on the auction block.

W.T.F. ??? and whatever letters stand for W.T.F. in all the other languages they have on that idiotic page.
-
Maybe the screen should say,
"Will the last person to leave iStock please turn out the Lobo."
signed,
Peebert
Seriously, they could send users over to Stockxpert, it still seems to be working.
-
The little joke's still on in the German version: Normalerweise arbeitet das Pannenmonster im abgedunkelten Internet-Raum still vor sich hin.
Oddly, the French and Spanish messages have been straightforward and unsophomoric in both versions. Perhaps they employ only English and German humorists.
-
With the version of the text that said it was 1979 again in English, we had what appears to be the original monster stuff in German. In French, in both cases, completely different text.
Google translate makes this of the French section: "t seems that we meet at this time a temporary problem, but we work hard to resolve it quickly. To wait, we want to offer you 10% off your next purchase of 50 or more credits, using the Coupon Code below." No 1979 and no bats in the belfry. Do they think the humor (and I use that word loosely) in English won't play well in France?
I detect a whiff of burning hair...
-
I think they were hacked (by a pissed off contributor with 15% commission?), messages are too creative for IS;-)
-
Welcome to Future Shock.

Maybe, being in Canada, they couldn't find anyone that speaks French.

@gostwyk :)
-
Oy Vey!
-
Pretty serious since here it's 9:20am (Tokyo, Tawain and Singapore time). Most offices start at 8am. It's the first day of the month and Thursday. Some projects might be on deadlines since the end of the year is near.
I don't know if they have many Japanese customers but those won't be happy at all with this history of failures in our prime time.
-
:o :o :o
Dunno whether to laugh or cry over IS's response.
-
now imagine someone in these countries running the error page through a google translator :(
-

Business just closed for the day here on the US west coast (5:33 p.m.), and there's a bunch of folks freaking out on Twitter about not meeting their deadlines today. Folks on the east coast must be really upset (8:33 p.m.).
-
What are the language 'links' at the top meant to do? Nothing, as far as I can see.
Those scroll down the page to the language portion corresponding to the link label.
Hopefully it's mainly intended for handheld (mobile) devices. I don't think too many designers are using primary displays with fewer than (approximately) 600 vertical pixels!
-
This is truly an embarrassment. This looks worse than Lucky Oliver's copy text gems. WOW.
Just WOW.
-
This is one of the weirdest things (http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6025/istock.jpg) I've seen from a company of this size. Hacked maybe? Time for a 100% royalty week once they come back online. :P
-
Anyone want to send some twitter messages mentioning some other sites like DT or SS or any others that are still up and running?
I was trying to add up my totals for the month and I realized I have no clue what the pathetic IS contribution actually is - and that was before the icky monsters got into the basement and reset the servers back to 1979 or whatever happened.
-
I Think its time for publishing mix Chuck Norris and iStokars jokes at Twitter
-
I don't understand the childish and unprofessional behavior. The twitter page seems to be run by one person who speaks like an individual, and the error page treats both contributors and clients as if they are 8-year olds. Do they really think people will laugh at their "funny" monsters and 1979 jokes? Many companies around the world rely on Istock for their images. They have deadlines to meet, projects to finish, yet Istock thinks we all live in a happy little joyful candyland where business and economics is of secondary importance. They don't seem to care what kind of message this conveys. Not just the downtime in itself is horrible, but the way they present it is horrible as well.
-
This is totally amateurish. They got $80,000 from my photos and this is the best they can do????? And I am only a small fish....Can you imagine all the money they got from all of us???? The non stop crap??? This is no joke???
-
I had company over at my house, tried to pull-up iStock, got the crazy page and they began asking me just what kind of company would do this and how unprofessional it was!
-
I had a client who was using it. We were trying to look at some photo she selected and that page came up. She is now searching elsewhere; canstockphoto.com and 123rf.com will be getting her business now. She also liked the prices on the latter two better.
-

Au contraire mon ami.
They've upped the discount to 15%.
Will the bosses or IT guys also get a direct 15% pay cut?

Doubtful. The first discount was 10% on 50 or more credits. This 15% discount is on any purchase.
-
There may not be any buyers left so we'll get to keep that 15% anyway. ;)
-
"Starting tomorrow until Dec 7, this code will give you 15% off any purchase: 1979SUCKS."
1979SUCKS? It's getting worse and worse. This is beyond nightmare.
-
Does an IT have enough clout to keep offering amended discounts? I smell a rat.
-
I think its very telling that istock is quick to answer tweets and offer discounts to customers yet when I ask how what they're going to do for contributors, I'm met with silence. That's exactly how important we are to them folks...
-
they have been replying to contributors' tweets too....
-
ridiculous. I just got back from the dentist - the left side of my face is numb.. I login to see if I have any sales.. and I get the ridiculous 1979sucks page. what? screenshot attached in case it changes and anyone misses this assinine thing.
really, iStock? can you also give contributors 15% MORE for what we are losing??
-
they have been replying to contributors' tweets too....
Well, not me. But if so, what exactly are they saying they're going to do to compensate the contributors? Nothing, I'm sure.

That's the improved version, jamirae. You should have seen the one that this one replaced. I think it's screenprinted in the other thread, the one about "maintenance or hack", something like that.
-
I'm getting a feeling they got hacked!
-

nothing you don't already know. just that they are working on it. I think they've been hacked too. no basis for that other than appearances.
-
I thought 1979 was a good year. I was born then. :)
-
Why blame on conspiracy (hacking) what is more simply explained by incompetence. Given the database/caching/everything else issues they have had with their back end over the last couple of weeks, lack of technical expertise is the most likely reason.
-
Personally, I don't think they got hacked. My guess would be it was a major implementation of something (what, I don't know) that went bad. They haven't always given us notice when things are rolled out. And there's way too much affected for it to be from a tweak of something -- it's uploads, downloads, royalties, RCs, sitemail, you name it. Just my two cents.
-
Why blame on conspiracy (hacking) what is more simply explained by incompetence...
It never even crossed my mind that this could be a hacking incident. I'd be amazed if it was anything other than internal screw-ups.
-
I'm getting a feeling they got hacked!
No, they haven't. They would be screaming in all corners if they have. This is just absolute incompetence of their IT department, massive failure, inability to restore the back-up and maybe (I wouldn't be surprised at that point) absence of back-up altogether.
-

Dang, I forgot about that. I was chortling over this latest iSfailstock episode and then I read that post and I realized WHAT!? I hate it when I cannot add up my revenues at 12:01 PM EST on the last day of the month. I already got my November report from Rodeo early this afternoon. I was all set, just waiting for 10:00 PM Mountain Time. Now iStock screws me over again in yet another way. That place is starting to p*ss me off :'(

It could also be an inside job. Anything is possible! But if true, they would never admit to it especially if it's an inside job.

you're not missing anything. it's not funny. the reason I thought it may have been hacked is because of how ridiculous the codes are. 1979sucks.....doesn't exactly scream professional
-
I'm reading twitter and some think the page is funny. All is see is text. Is there something I'm missing?
All I see is text too. Maybe they're laughing at the "back to the future" concept? I don't know. I don't understand the significance of 1979 either -- there was no 1979 iStockphoto -- maybe there' just something I am not getting.
-
Does anything they do scream professional ?
-
It seems like some are seeing images or something. "I love the error page" - there must be something else. I don't get the 1979 reference or why it's hilarious.
-

They are referring to the Stone Age of the Internet, I guess. When the web pages looked like this one. In reality there is nothing laughable about it - it is an indication of the serious IT problem they are having. As I've mentioned before - maybe they even lost the back-up (God help us then).
-

are there people actually saying it's hilarious? I don't think anyone is seeing graphics, but someone correct me if that is wrong
-
"Sat to work and got a laugh from the devolpers at t.co/EfNu4StT. Check their "site is down" page."
Just seems like a weird response to that page. Maybe the text is funny and I don't get it. I just thought it was missing its CSS or something.

maybe you have to be a total nerd to think it's funny...I'm only half-nerd.

And then there's the guy who said none of this is IS's fault. Say WHAT?!?!? :o He must believe monsters lead by Jay run the place.

It was on their error message page earlier, it was on twitter, and several affiliate sites have it listed. They might not be publicizing it now, as it's no longer on the error message page, but they did earlier.

I think the childish error messages show the source of all of the problems.

It's a pun on 'moustache', from the 'Movember' event, where people can grow a Moustache to collect money for cancer research. Apparently, Istock is participating.
-
^^ except it is December now - and a month since the downloads update broke
-
Grade A unprofessional here. I'm so glad I never went exclusive with them.
-
I was hoping they went offline to find all the sales that I am missing, but they must have forgotten to update as it looks same as this aft.
They didn't voluntary took the site down to fix the problems. The site just crashed and they had really hard time just getting it back.
-
They did announce 48 hours ago that they were going to push through some bits of code last night and the night before to fix some old bugs. The best guess might be that they broke something important while they were tinkering and maybe had to fight to restore the status quo ante as the best option in a crisis.
-
I'm sure the childish error messages were just an attempt to laugh off the seriousness of the issue and downplay it.
My, how we chortled.
-
I get the feeling those Cancuks are completely lost and out of control and all over oDesk looking for some php coders from India to sort it out. I've been down that road and the results look consistent.

The bad news is -- none of the images are being posted to the main database.
Oh well... ::)
