Title: free downloads are XXXL?
Post by: gillian vann on January 03, 2013, 19:12
just followed a link of the freebie of the month from iStock and the dl is available for free up to the biggest size (11MB!). Is that normal? I thought freebies were only ever 72ppi blog sizes? (DT does this?)

Perfectly normal for iStock as far as I know.

They never were only just blog sized.

Yup, they were always available at the maximum size of the file.
However, I believe you can still opt out of offering them, or maybe you even have to opt into the scheme.
I remember a couple of people a few years back saying that giving a free image did have a boost to their sales for about four weeks; but now even having the Image of the Week (not free) doesn't guarantee a lot of downloads - gone are the days that an IotW would usually get hundreds of sales (indeed they once expedited a new contributor to exclusive by that means).

Wasn't that Aldra? She arrived out of the blue with an amazing portfolio and they used her 'Pit Bull Bunny' as IOTW. That was back in the days when images were so cheap that designers bought them without a second thought just because they liked them. I could have sworn that about a year ago I noticed that Aldra's crown was missing and she'd gone independent __ although she's back as an exclusive now.

I was thinking of Olena/Elena and her photo of a woman with a cigarette in her mouth washing puppies on a washing board in a sink.
