Congrats and great portfolio.  Maybe this has been up for a while I never go to the photo page.  http://www.istockphoto.com/photo (http://www.istockphoto.com/photo)

Congrats - I just happened to notice this yesterday; I think it's been really buried in the site redesign which is a shame.

Thanks for the nice comments - really appreciate it! I just stumbled across it too - was very surprised to see my image on one of the pages, but pretty happy. The shot they've chosen is from Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand over 3 years ago- one of those days where I figured taking a D-SLR kayaking for a day was a good idea!

well done holgs,

making money whilst travelling is a lot of people dreams and I'd rather do it your way and take photos than work in some dodgy english pub for 3 pound an hour.

Great portfolio.

Do you do your editing on a laptop or do you wait until you get back to a base somewhere ?

Congrats - wonderful wonderful ... but, why it this being mentioned and discussed on these boards? Isn't this a woo yay thread found on  istock? Not to take away from the achievement I just don't want this place to be overtaken by the Borg with the whole koolaid woo yay thing?

Nice one Holgs... such an interesting & diverse portfolio, great to see it showcased.

I think it's a shame with the redesign that the image of the week and photog of the week aren't on the front page any more - it meant that the front page was always changing and looking fresh.  Now the landing page can have the same image for weeks at a time.  Seems like an odd step backwards to me.

But Holgs having checked out your blog I see you now have a big portfolio on Alamy.  If you'd prefer to keep it private, no worries at all, but if not... very roughly how do you find Alamy RM income vs. iStock RF income... are they comparable at all?

Congrats, I would like to travel the world one day but don't think my earnings will get me far yet.  Might try one trip next year and see if I can generate some profit to go again.

They don't inform you when you receive such a distinction?

Congrats, Holgs. As a travel photographer, it is refreshing to see your portfolio instead of the business people ones. :)

Some replies...

@ scorb re: Alamy - I don't think its any secret that IS income exceeds Alamy income for most by a long margin. Alamy makes up occasional bonus sales, whereas IS is more or less regular.

@ sobm - I started with the aim of getting my income to a point where it was enough to travel on, and got there after about 18months - for the last 18 months my income has been fairly much at that level, but I haven't really been uploading that much.

@ bunhill re: Post processing: In the past I've generally done everything on a laptop - this can be a problem because its just not possible to calibrate a laptop in the same way as you would a fixed workstation where you don't have changing light conditions. Its also much easier to miss errors because you see much less of an image when zoomed at 100%. I'm staying put to get a big backlog of images online at Istock over the next few months with a proper screen etc in Bangkok and will probably keep this as a base to travel from longer term.

@ caspixel - if they inform you its got lost in the mail somewhere!

@ madelaide - Travel stock really isn't the most lucrative in RPI terms, but its possible to keep shoot costs down to virtually zero as well. Sometimes the hard thing when doing stock is to focus on enjoying the photos that you take rather than thinking about what would make a good stock image.
