Title: I don't understand
Post by: pet_chia on April 12, 2010, 19:21
... when images begin to show up in the search engine.  When I go searching for my own images it seems to take maybe a week after approval before they start showing up using their original, approved keywords.

You can see this for yourself if you try a really generic search like "one person" AND computer.  The newest image that I can find in any keyword search sorted by 'Age' is always around a week to 10 days old.  Even the "Browse Recent" button seems to show exclusive images (presumably reviewed and approved in only a couple of days) that are over 5 days old.  Not exactly hot out of the camera.

Yet the "views" ticker for my newest images starts going up, often within minutes of the approval email being sent.  Somebody is finding my images right away, but how?  Are there different search queues, indexes or servers for some users versus others?

Among other problems, if the length of time before images show up in queries is slow or irregular then this will make it harder to drop seasonal content into the hopper "just in time".

From the istock home page (the logged in one) you can see latest images in the bottom right corner, which expands to show all recently approved images. Browse recent from the left nav bar takes you to the same place. I think buyers often browse these pages.

No, when the system is working correctly, the database is updated once a day.  Accepted images will show up the next day.

If you looked in the help forum, you would see the threads discussing the issues of last Thursday's outage.  Nothing has been indexed since then.

Thank you!  Just caught up on the whole thread.  That was a doozy of an outage.

Weird, I still don't see my images uploaded on 04/04, approved on 04/11 whereas I can see other images of non-exclusives on the site 'uploaded' on 04/07...  ???

There are all sorts of site problems at the moment, best plan is to hold off uploading for a week or two.

Yeah, it's probably that. I wouldn't like to be an IS site programmer at the moment  ;)

I managed to do some uploads and got a couple of files approved during these last few days, but AFAICT nothing that I have uploaded in the past 2-3 weeks is showing up in any keyword search.

If uploading "seems" to be working and you have a backlog of photos it may be worth it to keep uploading and not lose your window.

On the other hand if you keep on uploading but the images don't show up in searches then you may lose the one-time "bump" that new images supposedly have in the best match algorithm.

Conclusion: I know nothing.

I uploaded 5 this morning and they are showing in the q. Won't know if they show in the search engine until they have been approved (about 2 weeks from now, I guess, given all the other problems.)

Ditto.

I haven't submitted anything for a couple of weeks anyway.  I decided I could save a lot of time by not actually uploading to IS - now I just send emails to myself saying "too feathered or too rough" or "contains artifacts".

FYI, the search hasn't been updated since last Thursday.  rogermexico says they are working on it now.

That's good of them. Nice to know I'm getting something for the $8K they trousered from my images last month.
