I did a seach on Istock's form and almost every ftp request topic gets locked.  Why do they do that?
I just joined Istock and thier wed upload is a pain, Iphoto plugin does not read iptc info, and I can't get thier imagemanager app to work.  (even the programs devoloper has no clue whats wrong)

They're really proud of their upload 'tools.' Tried one. Didn't save any time. Still uploading there one at a time. That is once a week when they allow me to. And then there is the 'Category Selector'. The most convoluted upload process in the industry.

Fortunately, I'm getting a decent return there, but if that ever changed, they'd be the first agency I cut.

the worst thing about categories there is that they aren't even use yet, but you have to do it incase they implement what they say they will in the future.

I find the image manager does save time.

Try and find where the categories are used.  Apparently the plan is to be able to do searchs using multiple categories but I cant find it on the site.

They are pompous...I guess thats the best to describe.  They were #1 for a long time and it tends to get lonely at the top so they tend to lose touch with reality.  I always thought and still do think that categories suck.  Period.  Most people will prefer (if not all people) to use the search which will turn up the results they want.  Protect those by stopping keyword spamming and the problem is solved.  So until iStock gets dethrowned...they won't change.  Unfortunately they give Canadians a bad name.   :'(

They ignore FTP requests because they got their heads stuck so deep inside their arse the don't see the light anymore.

But yeah... they'll be dethroned soon. Dreamstime coming on strong and their traffic is growing the fastests

I suppose with their current systems iStock can rigidly enforce their strict upload limits. If they introduced FTP they would be receiving terabytes of crap every day.

Of course with a bit of planning such as StockXpert, you could FTP quite a lot but only transfer a certain number of files to the iStock queue each day/week. But they still end up with servers full of photos.

Probably better to issue FTP accounts to members that have sols some photos under the understanding that if you break the upload limits you have to go bad to imagemanager.

Maybe iStock spent a hunk of change on imagemanger and want to get their money's worth out of it.

One thing is sure their categories suck.

well not sure how quickly they are growing, but I do think they are growing, and will (hopefully) overtake istock... just not sure when :S

here is an alexa graph of traffic, unfortunate to say, but istock looks pretty strong.

Yeah, the lack of FTP is annoying. There was a survey a few weeks ago, and I said it was a problem and that their upload manager is pretty useless. (I really don't get how to use the * thing.)
I think there are some security issues related to FTP, so maybe that's why.

As for the categories, I'm much more positive. They were a pain in the beginning, and I posted a stern message in the forums, but I think they're OK now.

Offtopic post but:
These graphs are quite interesting - I had a look once at all the established sites.  If you look at just 2006, there is very little growth in the industry.  especially given the number of submiters is growing fast.

If the submitters are growing drasticaly then these graphs would show that too.  If the graphs are staying about the same, there is probably old submitters who are not going to the sites any more.

Actually, if you look at the traffic for IS (which is the biggest site), it does increase. Just look at the dips in the graph (which are the weekends) and how they are constantly increasing.

FYI: The big dip in April looks like Easter (which fell on April 16 this year).

additionally if you follow the average, it continually is climbing.  The super large jump in february makes it look like it has gone down in the last 6 months, but if you follow the angle of the graph from the previous 6 months before that, it follows pretty acuratly

I'm always saying this but:
Alexa is not a reliable source of stats. Alexa only counts visitors with the Alexa toolbar installed. I don't have it. Do you?

no I don't have it either, but users with the alexa toolbar are probably a fairly average set of users.  Even if they weren't 'average users' the results could be compared for a given site over a 12 month period and still be an indication of growth.

'Ditto' :-)...

It dosn't worry me so much as I don't upload a lot, but it'd be nice to have a non-OS dependant tool to do bulk uploads, as I use Linux.

I'm more concerned about the size of the queue there, even though they've had restrictive limits in place for a while.  Something odd is going on there IMHO, or maybe that counter on the front page is broke, as their image counter was on the run-up to the millionth image?
