Title: iphone app shows downloads but istock website does not?
Post by: jamirae on May 21, 2011, 17:42
okay, this is weird.

I have the iPhone app from21TORR and was just checking my downloads - it shows 5 downloads more than what I see on the iStock website.  a few things to note:
- I am not in the partner program
- I checked subscriptions and delayed royalties, nothing.

the most recent two downloads show on the iphone app and the website.  the next 5 after that (all from today) only show on the iphone app and not the website.  then there are 2 more downloads for today that show up on the iphone app and the web.

is there something weird going on here or did I miss looking someplace?

and.. I just checked and a few of those 5 images show on the istock website as having zero downloads when this should be their first download.

I think I'll post this on the istock forums to see if anyone there notices the same thing.  I've been looking and don't see a report of this weirdness.

I care. You've missed the OP's point entirely. There is a discrepancy in sales between different reporting methods __ and there shouldn't be.

It will be interesting to see what the explanation is.

well I care and yes, you miss the point since you obviously got hung up on your hatred of the iphone.  sheesh.  grow up.

I posted the same thing on the iStock help forum.  let's see if I get a reply.  I checked around more and still don't understand why the discrepancies.  very odd.   hopefully it will all sync up later today.

if it shows that I have more downloads that istock is not recording then that is a big deal.   I don't get why you are being so negative.

If you get a response at all, I'm sure it will be along the lines of: "I would like to assure everyone that all royalties are being paid on every download whether it's a download from iStock, Getty or the sites in the Partner Program.". *wink* *wink*

Any more news on this? Have the mystery sales finally appeared on the website? Have you had any more non-appearing sales since?

It doesn't seem like they are able to report sales correctly even on their own websites, it's really not surprising that the site/iphone app interface isn't working correctly.

nope, no news and these 5 mystery sales are still showing in the app but not on istock.  As far as I know, I've only gotten one additional download today and that one shows in both places just fine as well.  I posted in the istock Help forum but no response there yet.  it's the weekend so I'll wait until tomrrow and maybe someone will reply.

I was on a shoot with a photographer friend this morning - an istock exclusive - and she said she thought she had a similar issue with one download as well and didn't think much of it but was going to go back and check to see if it is indeed the same issue or not.

I also tried to get support from 21Torr folks (the ones who created the app).  Wasn't sure where to go for that help as their website didnt have a support link that I could find, so I posted on their Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/istockcharts (http://www.facebook.com/istockcharts).

I'll be sure to report back here any updates.

It's a phone app that jamirae is referring to...and istock has/had one for Android phones as well because I used to have it.

Tell me if I understand. Someone else makes an app that reports downloads wrong, so you blame IS for the problem? Is that it?

Who says the app is reporting downloads wrong?  Maybe it is or maybe istock actually has a problem?  Personally I'd be shocked if there was a problem at Istock.  Everything at Istock has been running with clockwork precision for months. ::)

Certainly worth a question to Istock.

From the app store  "Due to an update on istockphoto.com the "Last Downloads" feature was temporarily not available. This issue is resolved now. If you encounter any problems please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. Thank you."

Please dont read something that is not there into what i wrote. I am not putting blame anywhere.  I am trying to find out where there is a decrepancy.  The "blame" could be on either side at this point because i have yet to get all the facts.

Thanks i didnt see that.  Maybe my issue is related to this.  I will email them to find out.

Jamirae - please let us know how this turns out.  Them saying that "new downloads" being reported was an issue but that all was now well does not quite seem to fit your problem which was/is downloads on the app but not on the istock site. As said, do let us know if you get an answer - it's quite curious.

I'm not sure if this is related, but I noticed over the weekend some issues on the website related to earnings.  My earnings kept going up, but the photos weren't showing up on the last downloaded page.  Still not sure where the money was coming from.

Yes. I've had the same experience over the weekend. It's particularly noticeable immediately after cashing out. The Account Balance jumps up by a few $'s but then there aren't new sales of that value to explain it.

I've had similar problems going back several years.  Despite giving them good examples with times and dates they were not able to find that there was any discrepancy let alone what caused it.  Since it seemed like it was in my favor, I did not pursue it any further.

Seems to be happening less often than it did for me.

I just sent out the email to 21Torr and asked for some clarification on this.  Before that, I did a little more research and I think it may be a bug in their iPhone app.  It's a little complicated to type up so I'm going to wait and see if I'm correct in my analysis that I sent to them then I'll report back here and let you all know.  :)

FYI, You may want to check your "Partner" preferences...that's what I received this week-end and they don't show up in your "last download" page. They're paid at .28 cents each....and appear about this time of the each month.

I'll make this really simple. Where do you think the App gets it's data to report to us?

Why of course, they get it from iStock! So how can the app be finding missing downloads that aren't reported when the source is...

I think the same thing. You can't get a decent accounting of any of your downloads even just on the istock site, let alone having that data go through yet one more app. If I had to guess where the problem lies, I would think it's istock's reporting process, since they seem to have big problems with that, for months now.

The increase wasn't from partner sales...mine had already been added for the entire month prior to the weekend.  That's why I noticed it.  There's always the possibility, I guess, that they missed a few and added them one at a time on separate occasions during the weekend, but that seems unlikely.

yep, if you've seen the thread at istock, that was the culprit -- a bug in the app.

here is a snip of what I reported to them:

The image which shows as downloaded (by the app) just after the missing 5 downloads is this one http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208) (which would be listed in the "Last Downloads" just before the 5 missing photos/downloads show up on that page).
As I continued to try to figure out the issue I noticed that if you go to the file closeup page for the recorded download http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=14987208)  and you look in my description area on that page you'll see 5 additional thumbnails that link to related photos from this series.  These just happen to be the 5 other files that are showing up as downloaded by your iPhone app but not being reported as downloaded by iStockphoto.   Is this a bug I've discovered in the iPhone app as misreporting downloads that didn't really happen?

---

as reported by the developer, it is indeed an bug and I checked this morning and those files that showed as downloaded are now gone and it is reporting properly.

bummer that I didn't actually get downloads, of course, but glad to see the bug squashed and the issued resolved.  :)

Unlikely as it may seem, I received some on Friday and most on Saturday...

I have the picworkflow bar on my browser, it shows about five more dollars in my IS account that IS shows, this just started about 48 hrs ago, IS has never shown the new sales.  Not worth all the headaches to try to track down the missing $5 in sales.

Is it $5 exactly?  Could be a referral fee.  Did you check that?
