IS Description Links - Thumbnails vs. Lightboxes

In the IS description field I've seen people use thumbnails or lightboxes to link to other photos in their portfolio. What determines which approach is best to use?

i suppose how many other similar images you have.

if you have 50 similar images, a lightbox might be best.  If you have 2-10 maybe thumbnails would work..

I agree with Leaf and I also have another suggestion:

- A group of 5-6 images in the same series -> thumbnails
- A group of many images of the same subject -> lightbox
