Title: iStock Please Fix The Problem Before Its Too Late...
Post by: SwitchPlate on September 11, 2010, 08:12
It's not about the money, it's all about the love:

"But money isn’t going to be what makes you all happy. You want to know that this is still the best place to be, to hang out, and sell your work..."

When I read that latest excerpt from KK Thompson's iStock forum post from yesterday I almost injured myself from laughing too hard. Right, so if it's not all about the money, then why isn't 80% of the take enough for iStock already? The fact that iStock just gave itself a raise up to 85% says to everyone that it's all only about the money and nothing else.

To set the record straight, Kelly Thompson was an old college buddy of Bruce Livingstone, who was the founder of iStock. Kelly might have been part of the original vision behind the company when Bruce was developing the brain child, but Bruce is gone and Kelly is now trying to run the company without the proper corporate management training, or the level of management skills required to run a billion dollar company like iStock.

Then he starts just writing stuff of the cuff in his usual earthy, warm and fuzzy tone, which is fine when things are coasting along smoothly (as they pretty much have been up until now). But when its crunch time, and the company requires strong leadership and good corporate communications, someone completely incapable of that like Kelly can bring a company down almost overnight.

Please, for the good of iStock, its reputation, and all the contributors who rely on the company for their personal incomes, sack this granola bar before it's all too late for everyone else.

Sadly enough it was probably part of Bruce's sell out deal with Getty that they keep Kelly around for a period of time. Otherwise Getty could step in right now, fire Kelly, turn him into the fall guy for this whole debacle, and come out looking like heroes to all the contributors instead of the bad guys.

I hope IS does nothing and the market, both buyers and contributors decide it's fate.

SwitchPlate, there are already two threads in which Kelly Thompson's post is discussed.

Istock just blew it! (http://www.microstockgroup.com/istockphoto-com/istock-just-blew-it!/25/)
Vote on Kelly Thompson's Sep 10 explanation (http://www.microstockgroup.com/istockphoto-com/vote-on-kelly-thompson%27s-sep-10-explanation/msg160197/?topicseen#new)

Don't take me wrong, but we don't need more IS threads, there are too many already.
