The largest size available on IS for this image is medium, and they have to increase it by 60% to get the needed size. I had to upsize by 5% from the original file. That is why they contacted me in the first place.

I agree with posters who say that I cannot charge much since it is the same picture, only in larger size. Yes, I did have to do post processing again, from the raw file, but that is only because the original file is not the best when it comes to sharpness. It would not be fair to ask for some premium price for a larger size just because I reduced the size of the file originally.

I asked them for more details regarding the needed file format and also how many copies of the book will be printed. I also asked about their budget for the cover page and what compensation can I expect once I send them the file. I will let you know what they tell me.

Sincerely, if you have the image at RF microstock, it doesn't make sense to charge RM prices.

At last someone talking sense!

I've had requests like this on two occasions (out of 160K+ total sales). I say "Yes no problem, I'll email it to you". FOC.

If I've downsized the image it was almost certainly to either overcome a borderline technical issue or to improve the comp (and thereby sales) and I'll warn them of that. I won't do any post-processing at all, just pluck the original out and send it to them via YouSendIt. It maybe takes 10 minutes of my time and I'm happy to help a customer out. I do check that the image sold recently at the largest available size though!

On both occasions the customer was extremely grateful and I received a copy of the magazine or a photo of the exhibition display it ended up on. In your case I'd suggest a copy of the book __ I'm sure that would mean more to you than a few extra $'s.

Sometimes business isn't just about trying to exploit and maximise every opportunity to boost income. My own business isn't based on doing custom work for individual customers but instead on producing 'good enough' images at low cost and selling them in high volumes. An issue like this pops up about once every 18 months, takes a few minutes and really isn't worth charging for IMHO.

If you totally make a new image for them, then yeah you could charge them quite a bit, but in this case I would just send them the image unless you really need the money..

This makes the most sense.

Also agree with thesentinel.  Although uprezzing might not be practical for the reasons goldenangel explained, I am generally surprised at how many "graphic designers" don't know how to do minimal upsizing.

I had a buyer contact me yesterday having bought the maximum size on DT of a 12mp image taken with a 5D.  She wants to know if I have a bigger size so she can put it on a billboard or something.  (I don't - I uploaded the full-size image to DT)

I have had 6mp files from my 10D used on billboards and they looked great.  I linked her to an uprezzing tutorial for photoshop.  Haven't heard back so hopefully she figured it out ???

I was offered $50 and a complimentary copy of the book once it is printed. The book will be printed in about 5,000 copies.

I think this price is fair. I am satisfied as it is more than I would get for an EL on IS. I am also getting the copy of the book and I know I would try to find it and buy it once it is printed anyway :)

Well done __ that sounds perfect. The best deals are the ones when both parties are happy.

Why you dont upsize image thru raw and upload it to Alamy and send that link to you customer it will spend time and effort in payment process between you and him?
Prices at Alamy will be more than fair enough for biggest resolution about 330$ - 360$ for RF image.

Congrats, GA, it seems a fair deal.  I recently quoted a price for an image to be used in the cover of a magazine, and asking US$150 - a cheap price in regular market - resulted in no sale.  But this is part of the risk of selling RM.

Have you already sent them the image?  I would send an invoice with the restrictions, even if RF (no resale, no use in product creation, worldwide non-exclusive unlimited time usage).

Thank you Adelaide. I did send them the image already. I thought about putting together an invoice but it just seems like a lot of work. I'm thinking that they already paid enough for an EL and they are in a book publishing business so I highly doubt they will do anything else with it.

Sweet

Get us inform...  ;D

PS
Open account on Alamy just for that purpose (see my post above)  ;)
I see that you are on xxx time consuming small agencies (exclude big 5 or 6)
which mean that you have enough time to concentrate on next level.

Suljo, I already have an account at Alamy. I don't think it would have worked in this case because they would not pay Alamy's prices for this image.

So you got 1 cent per copy for your image... It was obvious that the image was important to them.  You should have got a better price for your image, this is too low.  Always keep in mind that there is a world beyond micros and their microprices.

Indeed there is, but if the image was once sold as micro, that's the world it's in.

You can't expect to sell an image at macro prices at the same time.  Sounds like an equitable deal to me.

Congrats, GA. Do you know what the book is about?
It's a children book named "Newts". It's gonna be sold to schools and librarries as well as to some bookstores (Barnes and Nobles and Target) here in the US.

I know, the shadows are harsh. I did improve it more in the version I sent to them. Obviously, they didn't mind them from the start. :)
