Just so I'm absolutely certain, these three illustrations would fail the iStockphoto vector illustration test because they're silhouettes right? Or should I submit them and see what happens(maybe I'll get lucky)?

I have tried several times at Istock for vectors and haven't passed either.  I don't think you will have much chance with those 3.  I think they want complicated, well thought out vectors to get past the test, then perhaps those may be accepted.

Well I did not passed for 3 times now I think. I need one more vector approved , and as I see it they want stuff that is a bit complicated to do , and somehow unique.

I waited for a month and I can try again now , but I I fail this time , I'm stuck for 3 month as I read somewhere , so I will be extreme careful  , cause I missed an unfilled path last time.

I only tried once, with simple illustrations.  I was rejected and haven't tried it again.  I have very few complex illustrations, and even what I have is probably too simple for them.

It's a pity when some of my best selling images in other sites are the simple illustrations, I even got ELs.  So it feels like I'm losing money not having them in IS too.

Adelaide

I don't know how to help you, because I don't know how I passed the test on just 1 try. All I can tell you is that you must send 3 very different images... and I think silouettes are too simple and doesn't show your abilities as an illustrator or designer... you have to be creative, and I think it is hard to show you are creative with silouettes.
I can show you 2 of the 3 ones that made me pass the test, hope this helps you.

Latex,

Maybe you can take a look at my illustrations at DT and say what you think might work for my next attempt at IS?  Thank you.

Adelaide

They don't want to see common images, even if they would make good sellers. To get through the application process, upload more complex stuff. Then submit the silhouettes afterwards.

This is one that I used on the app:

Adelaide in my opinion i think that your best chance is the clock, the aliens and the easter time. IS is very demanding in what they accept. By careful  with transparency (they dont accept) and open paths . And boa sorte ;)

Adelaide, like Paulo, I think the aliens are ready to go, but I wouldn't use the clock. If I were you I would take the time and make some more complicated illustrations to pass the test. It worth the effort.
This thread may help you see what is accepted: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=64382&page=1
Buena suerte!  ;)

Latex and Paulo,

I am not very artistic.  My illustrations are very simple.  These two for instance sell a lot in DT, StockXpert and FT:

the latter being my overall best-selling image at FT, yet I don't think IS would accept it, would they?

I would not have thought of the aliens.  Although more complex than the others, it's not really very attractive, but maybe for the application it is indeed a good choice.  What do you think about picking these two also?

I'm certainly unable to do those very detailed examples in the IS thread!

Regards,
Adelaide

This got rejected:

Adelaide if you can do simple ones you also can do complex ones! take a look at this site
http://www.pixel2life.com/
They have great tutorials.
IS is great for illustrators because the price, i make more money in IS that in SS and in SS i have almost 3000 downloads and in IS only 660. But i get 2,5$ for each download.

Of course you can do more complicated illustrations! You just have to add more elements and take more time. Like Paulo said, it worth it. Once you are in, you can send simple illustrations... they will cost just $1, but can make you good money. For example, I made a shamrock (as simple as yours) that costs $1, it is on line since 01/11/2008 and has 362 dls which made me $112.
Of course it's up to you, but if I were you I'd go for it!

Would something like this pass?

I know they are silhouettes but include more objects...

Or some buttons:

You can try but I dont think they will, you need something original that show your illustration technique to the best.

No need to apologize, I know they are simple illustrations. If I was positive they were good enough I wouldn't even ask here and just apply at IS. Thing is that often buyers like simple things. Some illustrations that I see on IS seem like art to me and would fit better into some museum and not on the cover of a magazine :D But the problem is that you have to get past reviewers first :D

Adelaide if you can do simple ones you also can do complex ones!

Now quite so, I lack the creativity and artistic sense to do that type of high level illustrations.  But I'll take a look at that site, tutorials are always welcome.

I kept getting rejections, and took most of a year off of trying stock. kind of practicing and doodling. Doing a tutorial or two a week. I find FT will accept most illustrations if you want a place to upload to feel like you're doing something.

I think they do still like closed paths and no stray points, buy if you check in outline mode (ctrl or cmd+y) you can find them quite easily. and for strokes I like to keep I just use object/expand.

The time off helped, I get some practice at work also. Getting a few views. No purchases yet (though as I understand ft vector sales have declined drastically, probably from all the crap they will accept).

Ah look, a mummified topic.

Yeah, I've been reading these forums for a few days and thought maybe I'd register and stick my nose somewhere. ;) I'm going to try Istock again with these 3, wish me luck.

NVM maybe I won't  >:( I've tried like 100 times 100 different ways and it just keeps saying it's not a valid .zip file.

This is an ancient thread but I'll play along.

I tried to get accepted at iStock many years ago and had one of my three files accepted. After a few more attempts I gave up and decided that this "stock" thing wasn't for me. For some reason I never thought at the time that there would be other places to submit my work.

A couple years later after becoming aware that there were places other than iStock I started submitting my work and making some cash.

After just over a year and a half I'm closing in on 30,000 downloads at Shutterstock alone. That one file that was accepted at iStock? It was one of my first ten at Shutterstock and has been one of my least popular images with a whopping 8 downloads.  Those files that weren't good enough for iStock have been downloaded hundreds of times.

To put it simply... F#$% iStock.

there is a thread in the IS forums: UPLOADING ISSUES
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=353011&page=1
It seems that you are not the only one having trouble uploading.

IS drives me nuts, 'please upload',we've made inspections really fast! And  look, we've changed your upload limit to 999 file a week'!

Sure it sounds really tempting, but how long are they going to let the Best Match sink  new files to the bottom of the search?  When I think  that I might take a chance and  upload some art,  then I see that the upload process is broke. I think fate has interveined for me.  I work too long on my stuff to not give it a fighting chance.

I think I'll just skip Istock even though I've heard it to be one of the biggest earners. From reading around I can assume how well they treat their contributors, and I can't figure out the stupid upload process anyway.
