Found the same photo in my morning paper. Interestingly enough it had a Reuters byline there - thankfully the text explained it was actually taken by Kate's father  :)

I think that in this case it is not so important the quality of the image, but the fact that it is unique.

Think is deliberate - to show they are Down with the peasants - I believe the queen is a keen photographer - with her Leica

At least Kate's dad put them in the shade with some back lighting.

I think it is a lovely family picture. You can see they look happy even without perfect lighting and photoshop.

If the royal family is putting out family snaps taken with a crappy phone cam, then Yuri might be the one laughing last. Could he have it right after all?

I'm not trying to insult other photographers.  But I guess that makes you feel good about yourself.

oh please, read this topic again (at least your posts) and tell me the reason behind the following one:

I won't be holding my breath waiting for you to get a picture of the royal family.

yes it was a dumb entry because it was completely OT

Easy you are trying to insult the photographer of that image, so I said let's how much better your shot of the royal family is.  The point being you cannot even get close to being allowed to take a shot like that.  I'm curious what the point of this topic was, other than to try to insult someone?

1st I havenīt insulted anybody apart from you after your sad entry (if I have insulted Kate's father please tell me where)

2nd the point of opening this topic is relatively simple to explain, pretty much this is being talked in all social networks so I had the feeling it would interesting to talk about it here too but once again iStock/Getty matters cannot be discussed with you, next time you don't like a topic I open please move along, I won't miss it and sure other as well ;)

On the plus side, it shows in a very public way the difference between a family snap and what a pro portrait photographer would produce.

On the down side, "If it's good enough for the royal family..." - why pay for a pro?

I imagine they just saw a nice pic and thought it might be nice to share with the general public, who will lap it up.  For the royals, this is their equivalent of putting a photo on facebook to show their friends.

Reuters acts as distributor if the author gave it to them, Getty credits "handout" so i guess the author gave the memory card to some reuters or getty guy ?

I think they're just doing this to try and look trendy.  Its all about PR.  They've worked hard to fool the public into liking them again.  I bet they will of had lots of professional photos taken, as this could be a future king, if the revolution doesn't happen :)
Perhaps they've used Mario Testino again?  He did one formal and one snapshot for the engagement photos.  This seems to be taking it to the next level of informality.  They can get any photographer they want and keep the photos private or release them at a later date.

Its a bit like the staycation.  The political leaders pretend they're going on holiday in England, then privately jet off later to somewhere more exotic.  It must fool some people, or they wouldn't bother doing it.

Can we have a link to this please? Despite the fact that it's widely reported in UK papers where political leaders holiday, both in the UK and abroad, you believe they pretend to holiday here, then sneak out of the country, with no one seeing them and being aware of where they have gone?

They aren't going to get a relaxing holiday in the UK, I think they do it for the PR.  It never looks right.  Then they have a proper holiday somewhere hotter.  I just don't see the point in it.  And I didn't say they sneak out of the country, with no one seeing them.  They're bound to be seen on their proper holiday, making the one in the UK look even more like a PR stunt.
David Cameron has only had 4 holidays so far this year. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/david-cameron-in-beach-mode-as-he-and-samantha-enjoy-fourth-holiday-of-the-year-8776138.html (http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/david-cameron-in-beach-mode-as-he-and-samantha-enjoy-fourth-holiday-of-the-year-8776138.html)

I agree.
But I think that they have understood very well that even if the image is not a so good one for the quality it is an excellent one (read $$$) for content (read $$$ again…)

it's a worrying sign, and i see less and less people able to judge a good photo from an ugly snapshot, for them they're all "good enough".

Hasn't that always been the case? Before I decided to shoot for micro and editorial I thought I was a decent photographer. Now I realise I'm just mediocre.....but technically proficient.  8)

we're indeed mediocre, i've seen amazing stuff done by famous illustrators all using photos, brushes, textures, Archicad and Photoshop, just .. wow .. F ing brilliant, that's ART 100%, and the techniques they use are quite complex, not suitable for the average random stocker.
