Title: Randomly invited at Getty...
Post by: vonkara on November 18, 2011, 15:38
I am a silver exclusive at Istock and I have been invited at Getty. I hardly spend any time making new pictures since late 2009 and I only cash out 2 times a month from Istock, without much more interest. Let say that I am kind of disconnected from the microstock world and even from the photography world.

I did a little research, but I don't know where to start and I wonder how it is working at Getty images...

-Is it only editorial pictures that are good sellers?

-How much do we get from a normal/usual sale?

-Is there a cost related to having images available at Getty? (I overheard this somewhere and it is still in my head for some reason)

-Can I submit Istock images to Getty?

-And knowing how things were working back in 2009/2010, what right or how much contributor share am I going to lose by contributing to Getty.

Thanks for any help!

Did you get invited to submit images to Getty? As a photographer´s choice contributor? Or as a House contrbutor?

Or did you just get the email today that you can now access the inner halls of Getty to use the Getty resources? The creative briefs etc...?

Because the email that was sent out today has confused many.

Otherwise I suggest to post all your questions in the istock getty forum. Or the exclusive forum.

Yes it was today and here is what it said...

Dear iStockphoto Exclusive,

We are happy to invite you to access the Getty Images Contributor Website, www.gettyimages.com/contributors (http://www.gettyimages.com/contributors). At this site we maintain a large library of detailed creative briefs accessible to exclusive contributors only along with targeted research into visual trends. Yes, you got a login to read their information.

Sorry, you cannot send them photographs. At least not yet. :-)

But you can use all their resources. They have excellent creative briefs.

Check out the forums. The links don't work properly, but you can get there in the end.

If youre invited to the actual house-collection. Go for it !  if its photographers-choice: I would think twice about it.

It's not an invite to submit. It's just an ability to get the 'what's wanted' lists.

why am I not surprised that people are confused with communications from Istock and that the links don't work.

Photographers choice you pay money (i think its like $50) for each image you submit. There have been threads about it before here on msg. Previously If you sell a photo you get another free slot. Some people report making some money but its a large investment.

I received the same e-mails -they sent a 2nd one just a minute ago. I've been a Getty contributor for a little while so I'm not sure why I'm receiving invite to the contributor site… I assumed it was just an error of sorts. To the OP, have you tried the credentials that were sent on the upload portal?

From the iStock forums:
Getty Images has a website which all of their contributors use to upload their content. It also acts as a hub to keep them up to date with news and information. It contains a whole lot of info about the stock photography industry. We're happy to announce that very soon all iStock Exclusives will be given access to the creative research resources on the Getty Images contributor website.

Watch your inbox during November for an invite email from Getty Images. This will set you up with log-in information for the site. You'll then be able to browse and read the proprietary briefs prepared by Getty Images' creative research team to help inspire and inform you.

Just to clarify, this is not an invitation to contribute files to Getty Images - it's an invitation to access their research and resources. I think it's worth mentioning that this information is prepared by their Creative Research team with their own contributors in mind, but you'll find that the info is very applicable to what we do here at iStock as well.

We are working here at iStock on creating briefs and research specifically for iStock contributors. To start though we think it will be really beneficial for you all to get access to the excellent work done by Getty Images in this area.

We're sending the invitation to all iStock exclusives across all mediums. The research on there tends to be photo and video focused, but I think that the info will be helpful to Illustrators as well. Get in there, dig around and get inspired.

Photographer's Choice contributors now get 40 FREE uploads per quarter, so I can't possibly see the downside of contributing if invited.  I'm sure using all those free submits in addition to adding to the House collections.

Yes but you cant just add, just like that to the house-collection, the house-collection is Gettys flagship, ( mainly Stones and Image-Bank ) has always been and its all RM and you have to get in there by merit. Then you can add.

40 free uploads? But anyone can submit to photographer's choice, or they could. Does this mean that they can now decide to put PC work into TS, in line with their right to choose where to send it, or is it a special offer for iS exclusives?

yes but not just for PC for all RF-images also they can move RM to RF so finally they can move every image to TS

Ultimately I recon everything will end up in TS, its all pointing that way Im afraid.

Well, I wouldn't mind paying $50 to get 1+40 images into Getty's main search but not if I'm just giving them $50 to have 41 more images shoved into TS.

I had a look at some of the pdfs. Of course, it's not for me, but I'm nosey.
Seems to me that some of the 'requests' are very precise and would be very expensive to set up. Is it worth any photographer's time to do that? (I'd better not mention any specifically as the conditions said we hadn't to copy, but look in USA for example). It would be worthwhile for someone doing it as a paid job, but not for 20%. From the requester's point of view, wouldn't they be better to hire a 'tog, rather than have to pay some huge price to Getty to make the expense worth the while for the photographer? (I mean very specific requests where specific types of people (professionals = expensive) and locations needing PRs are needed)

Yeah, as a house collection contributor, I'm well aware of that.

I got the same invite and this is of course only for info sharing and market research. Not to be disrespectful but I'm looking at this as a teaser ....  :-X

Yup, you can look at the chocolate, but only touch the wrapping and read the labels...for now...;-)
