Title: Search ranks
Post by: Gizeh on February 15, 2007, 03:38
I just realized that some of my poorer images get excellent downloads because they show up on page 1 while some of my best work hardly gets seen because it has a quite bad search rank.

Does anyone know how the search ranking works at iStock when the default ('best match') sort order gets used? It looks like it is neither driven by no. of downloads, no. of reviews, age nor by exclusivity.

Is there a secret algorithm at work or do inspectors provide a personal rank for every image?

Regards

To put it shortly there is some secret ranking system.  i wouldn't doubt if the inspectors give it an excellent/good/ok rank to start things out.  Rank may also have to do with how often the image is purchased/viewed compared to searched for, and of course keywords play into it, and perhaps the image rating and so on.

Rank has VERY much to do with sales though.  I had a crummy image of a skeleton key that sold like hot cakes when it showed up on page one for some reason.  A year later it got knocked down to page three and didn't sell after that.

Rank has to do with sales or sale have to do with rank.  I think you are saying the latter which I dont really think is in dispute.

The question though is how to get images onto the first page.  As you say there appears to be some mystry element which maybe a reviewers rating.
