I was just curious about the entire creative network aspect of istock.  I presently do not see its usefulness, but I think thats because I dont understand why its there and its purpose.  Would someone please enlighten me.  Thanks.

I think it's to put emphasis on the "big happy family" thing that they try to make us believe that they have created. As long as they sell my photos, I'm ok.

yeah, i am not sure what the points is either.

I suppose it is easier to view other peoples portfolios that way, or perhaps send them a message???.. not sure.

I don't see any practical use in terms of sales or visibility.  I think it works for ourselves if we want to see what others are doing (friends, people we meet at the forum), as it gives a quick access to those in our list.  And if you're curious, you can check your contact's contacts.

Adelaide

I have lots of people in my CN but rarely have time to look at their portfolio's. If I had a spare moment I might just do that but when do serious microstockers have any spare time???  ;D

CN is pretty good. But again it depends on who is in your CN and whether they share information.

1) My CN gives me tips to do stuff relevant to istock

2) My CN tells me when istock changes their alogritm on how photos are in the front page when they discover and share tips on how we can do it eg when istock changed and nobody disambiguate, a CN discovered that his sales increase many fold when he disambiguated and he sent a site mail to CN and we all start to disambiguate right on the onset

3) My CN taught me how to do links and stuff when i have problems and wanted to learn new things on istock

4) My CN rate each other now and then when we see photos that we like in each other's portfolio

5) I am in the "Race to Bronze" by Apr 2007 so my CN has a blog that keeps track of the progress and being in the CN gives me easy access to the infor.

6) Also when i started, some people in the CN started at the same time as me and I could use them as a reference point to see how I have progressed in terms of no of downloads. Whether i was doing better or worst etc. It gives me some sort of a marker.

7) When one of my CN gave his photo as "Free Photo", he informed us and I was able to track and see whether this had impact on his sales and whether I wanted to do that as well. I discovered that sales did not improve at all although many people downloaded his photo in that one week. So I decided eventually never to give "Free Photos" to any stock sites.

that's some of the things my CN does and I have found it to be extremely helpful for a newbie....i have been here at istock for 6 months and many things were taught me by my CN, but i must say that its only 2 or 3 in the CN that has been really great in the above instances. The rest are not so.....

Three members have spotted images of mine in magazines and sent me copies.  They recognize my models as they regularly look at my portfolio and I often spot images by members of my CN and send copies to them.  Often I don't bother if I recognize something and don't  know the photographer.

The first one (number 4) is the main reason I see. People use the CN to help eachother out by rating their CN's photos since rating effects the position in the best match search, and therefore sales.

I disaggree with the second one (number 7). I had a free photo and my sales went up. Yes, many people got that photo free, but I've also had 3 ELs on that "free" photo. It had no downloads for several months of being up, and now it has 9 downloads not including the 3 ELs. I'm happy with my decision to let them use it.

P.S. That person in your CN was me, Mr. peilin75.

Edit: Here is my sales for last year, can you guess which month I had a free photo of the week?

I would say that is not conclusive, since November is the best month for most submitters (because of the holiday season rush).  My best month was also November and I never had a free image at any of the sites.

Ok, how about the daily downloads for November? And remember that the ELs from that image made me $45, plus I don't have any holiday images in my portfolio so I doubt there was a holiday rush for me.

Not all contributors have a peak in November. I have no holiday pictures at iS, and my sales went down over 30% from October to November.

Interesting facts about CN as well as free images in this thread.

hi yes yingyang, that's right :D ;D you were the CN.

I must admit that it was a conclusion that i drawn by looking at no. of downloads. It was an estimate. But it is true that I am not aware of the "extended license sale" that u had as a result of that giving of free photos to istock. Thanks for the information, it would not be available unless u have revealed it. Now, that changes the whole perspective of giving of free images. I guess i was expecting sales to increase exponentially cos so many people download the free image but i fail to realise that there are other intrinsic benefits like getting ELS etc.

Sorry, it was just a joke.  ;)
Now the serious things. English is my third language please dont misunderstand me, Im not arrogant guy, just not good to chose the right words.
Im quit new in micro stock word and I think that CN maybe a good way to progress. We can help each other and better understand how this business works. I would be happy to how a ranking system works, importance of categories, titles, description So the real question is if we want to take advantage of CN to analyse this system and have feedback or just to have a big number of members. I propose some rules, Id be happy to know what are you thinking about it.
1.   Ranking. If you rank somebodys photo - be honest. Rank only a few images, not entire portfolio. I will be happy (maybe happy its not a good word  ;D) even if you rank MY photograph 0/5 if you really think its a crap. If we want to have real results we need real data.
2.   Messages. Ill be happy to help you if I can. Ill try to respond all serious post, but write in English is painful for me so:  Ill not respond to all happy birthday, French fries vs. freedom fries messages.
3.   Reviews. Take a look to others portfolios. If we find wrong keyword, category or copyright problem PM the owner. Suggest new-better keywords.
4.   Feedback. Inform each other about influence of changing (ranking, keywords changing ) on downloads
Thanks to try to understand me.
Regards,
Jacus

As far as iStock rankings are concerned, here are the current findings from multiple sources:

- The more 5s the better.  They help in bringing your photo to the top of the Best Match (default) sort order.  The first batch of images that show up in the Best Match sort order will have ALL 5 ratings.

- But there are other variables involved as well, such as whether you are Exclusive (exclusives show up first), how many downloads the image has had, and how long the image has been online (higher downloads combined with an image being online a short time show up first).

- A non-5 rating will send an image pretty far down the Best Match order and basically kill any sales potential.  The first images that show up on the Best Match are ones with all 5 ratings.  So if you have ANY non-5 ratings, then you will not appear in the first batch of images at all.  So I would suggest refraining from rating an image lower than 5.

My suggestions:

- If you don't like the image, then don't rate it.  It will only hurt the image and can lead to retaliation and bad relations between members.

- If you have a suggestion that would help make an image better, then send a message (PM) to the artist.

I've found that it only takes 1 five rating to get to the front. The things I've seen that they take into account are:

1) If it has at least one rating, and that the rating(s) is a 5.
2) Downloads/Month. For the first month they artifically put this number high.
3) Exclusivity

and of course you're keyword has to map to the same CV term that the search is for.

that's a great idea Jacus!! We should make use of CN to exchange useful infor etc.  ;D ;D Benefits everyone.

I only rate those i like and i give them a "5". I also add those i like to my "lightboxes".

Usually what i do is when i have  a new CN. I will go throigh the whole portfolio maybe 100- 300 photos and rate those i like, sometimes 1 or 2, other times more depending on the photos. I only rate those photos that i personally think is nice and appeals to me. Other than that i dont rate.

Every now and then i will go to Creative Network tab and rate new photos from my CN. When i am free i will even go to browse and rate photos i like even of people i dont know.  i appreciate nice photos ;-)

Feel free to add me to CN.

Wow Digiology, after having read your post, I went to see Snem's portfolio.  Angelafoto gave hin 2 times 2 stars, and Alfiofer gave 5 times 1 star, and nothing else...

These ratings are all new, they were not there 2 days ago when I first went through Snem's portfolio.  Definitely an unscrupulous agenda!

Alfiofer, like Snem, is also an Italian photographers, mmmhh...
Very sad...

I sitemailed Lobo about Alfiofer because it wasn't just Snem. When I was wiki'ing Italy it looks like he has done this a lot.

Edit: It may be an italian thing because I also found this photo that Snem did it to: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/landscapes/95949_a_sea_landscape.php?id=95949

I must explain something. I did not understand that ratings would put images down in sales until about a month ago when I have rated 1 four or five pics of Naples' surrounding that looks awful to me and only one was of alfiofer.  Naples is the city where I live,  I know what its panoramas can offer to a photographer, so I have put to those photos a bad rating and I wrote a review. The day after alfiofer rated 1 five photos of mine without write a review to explain why. So I understand that images with bad ratings go down in searching and I write to alfiofer telling him the same I'm telling to you. I have changed to 5 all of my bad ratings. So alfiofer don't have bad ratings now, but I have. The right punishment to my unexperience. my question is... why let photographers the possibility of rating photos that a rate of 1 is considered "fight"? Why telling "it may be an Italian thing" if it already exists the english term "rating gang" or "rating fight"?
Regards,
Danilo

PS: please try to understand what I told you in the best way, because my english is very bad and it may be interpreted in the wrong way.

yes, I hardly think that rating fights are 'an Italian thing'.  Perhaps what ying yang meant was that this apparent fight between the three of you was something internal between the three of you for some reason... making it italian.

nonetheless, I also think it must be a problem for istock.  Rating fights, cliques giving only 5's to ALL each others images, ...

not sure what the solution would be though.

Drop the whole ratings thing...

In my modest opinion a solution could be:
  • let users rating images only with a thumb up (no bad rating): the sum of those ratings rates the image
  • do not show rating information in thumbnail list but only when an image is open: so rating have less power to impress a possible buyer
  • last, but most important, throw away from sorting/searching algorithm the variable "rating": no convenience in rating is the best medicine to abuse

what do you think?

I would think the best system would be, if only the admins and the reviewers can rate images. And that they should not rate images only fives, but 1-5 and 3 is neutral like an image which never has been rated. According to that they should also show up in the best match search.
And every reviewer should do a rating after he reviewed the image.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree.  Ratings are totally subjective.  You could have ten reviewers look at the same image and give vastly different ratings.  Some people love abstracts and some people hate them.  Some people love people shots and some people hate them.

Having reviewers rating images would also slow down the queue and increase the # of images in the queue.  You think the queue is bad now...

If an image is passing inspection, then it is being rated in a way.  Every image on IS has already passed lots of criteria.  So every image up there is supposed to be the best of the best.

To have ratings affect sales is a very bad thing...

If a stock site is going to implement a ratings system, then it should only be viewable by the artist.  This way comments could be made on an image without affecting sales.

I would rate a lot more images if it was a private system (where only the artist could see the rating) and it wasn't linked to sales.  This way I could give honest critique without feeling that retribution would be coming from an irate artist.

Just a thought not a sermon...  :)

That was my feeling too.

I just remember that a few months ago I chose a DT picture from Alfiofer for one of my collections, and I had a nice exchange with him.  I hope that I didn't get him in trouble because of the 1 star ratings he gave to snem.  If this could be solve amicably, that would be great.

Just to add something to CN discussion and to "rating exchange" organization, take a look to the portfolio pf this user http://www.istockphoto.com/user_view.php?id=597575.
Order by newest first and note the straordinary number of ratings from his CN... I hope Istockphoto do something about the rating system, if not, we are just late to organize ourself  ;D

Sorry, what I meant was that it was a ratings fight between two Italian photographers. It wasn't a a racial thing (I'm an Italian-American). If it had been between two Canadians I would have said it was a "Canadian thing" (is Canadian a race?).

Personally I give a 5 or nothing at all. That way no one will come after me.

Being Canadian is a "dogs breakfast" these days with the immigration here, "every handfuls' a whole new ball game"! heheh (I'm 5th gen Canadian/American)

(the above is not meant to be/sound racist in anyway, just that a "Canadian" now is every race, every religion, every person - which is GREAT in my opinion)

I think the rating thing is another thing to help create the istock addiction some have, same as the CN, the Steel Cage, etc...

If you want to add me in to your CN i have the same user name :)

I'm a little late to this thread, but I got everybody added.

I have really noticed an increase in sales since my CN finally got some members. I don't have that many ratings but I definitely get more sales from my rated images.

Since this thread started quite a few people responded to this CN group.  Very inspiring.

I also noticed that some members were adding some five star ratings to the newly approved pictures.  Wow!  thanks!  Now I understand better how the CN can be very dynamic and fruitful.

Being new to the whole CN process, I just discovered a few days ago that there was a link for "New Uploads by Members" under the CN tab.  I wish that they could show the pictures chronologically rather than randomly, but it is still a good help for finding new pictures.  I may have missed some photographers because of that.

The idea, as I understand it, is to support each other by rating ONLY the images we like with a 5-star, so that when there is a search the image wouldn't be buried.

Also, for the photographers who would like to join, here are below the names of the people participating in this MSG CN.  Some are still guests on this forum.  Rather than wait for being invited, invite them to be part of your CN, and you'll be automatically added to theirs if they accept.  Sure it does takes time to go through everyone's portfolio, but I see it as a win-win situation...

Leaf, maybe  you'll find a way to make the MSG CN more functional on this forum rather than to go through this thread?  You seem to be a very creative person.

Well there is a problem professorgb. If you're professorgb on iStock then you're not accepting creative network members right now.

I didn't know my defaults had been changed.  I've been adding members individually, and it hasn't been a problem.

The problem should be fixed--let me know if it's still not working.

I like the idea of a MSG creative network. If anyone would like to add me to their CN my IS user id is stu99, and I will add you to mine.

It would be more logical (and faster) than a new member add the old one. You have the complete CN list above. ;D

Feel free to add me also to your CN.  Same user name as the one I'm using here.  Thanks!

I like to add comments to new pictures, because I don't want to rate every single picture that someone uploads in my CN just because it is new, kinda diminishes the "5" effect in my opinion.

The "5" should be saved for pictures I think are "fabulous" or give me the "wow" factor. I really like it when people leave comments. I think it is interesting to read what they say and encouraging also.

Just out of curiousity, does a comment help in the search option or just a rating?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the ratings and that they help me get more downloads, but I would like to get a good rating because that shot deserves it.

Comments don't help in the search algorithm and from what I've seen only the first "5" rating makes a difference. Any subsiquent ratings, so long as they aren't below a 5, don't really effect the search results.

I was just looking at my portfolio in best match again, it seems that IStock very recently changed it so that ratings now mean little to nothing. An image of mine that was getting many recent downloads but did not have a rating was suddently in front of my over 1000 image portfolio. What inspired me to check my best match today is that my sales have suddenly taken a dump on IS, especially vectors. Sales are about 15% of normal today and no vector downloads. But then alot of my older images don't have any ratings at all, so I would think if ratings no longer counted those sales would pick up. don't know what to think.

I think they have stuffed something up.  Ratings dont mean anything even when sorted by "rating".  Arguable they shouldn't affact "best match" but should definately affact the rating search.

Hi,

Did you all find bumb in your sales when people started to join your CN and giving rankings? I got huge bumb in my sales at first, but not sure how the rankings counts nowdays (sales are low at the moment)... Any ideas how we can still improve sales on IS? How we get more buyers to join our network??

And you can always add me to your CN under name: "mjp" :)

br, Mikko P.

Ok, just invited/ added the whole bunch of you to my CN, quick work thanks to the list berryspun provided (thanks for that!). I copy his list at the bottom of my post (including my name) so that new people can do the same I did. Ok, I go now and have a look at all the portfolios of people that already accepted my invitation, and let's agree "It is 5 or never?" Ok, let's say "5 or sitemail" Thanks SY
