Title: What can we do to improve your Getty Images/iStock experience?
Post by: AnS on June 22, 2017, 08:56
I've got this e-mail from info(at)e.gettyimages.com

Tell us your thoughts and help us do better.

Dear Contributor

To give you the best Getty Images/iStock experience possible, please take a 3-minute survey to tell us what we can do better for you.

Please use the below URL:
surveymonkey(dot)com/r/GIContr?ID=XXXXXX (I did not open yet, better be cautious!)

If you have any questions, please contact contributorsurveys(at)gettyimages.com.

We appreciate your feedback and we will be sending surveys on other parts of the experience later this year.

What do you think about this? Did someone else get this e-mail too?

I guess it's a normal survey; usually companies use them to receive a feedback from the users.
I usually receive requests like this from airlines, e-commerce websites, booking websites.

Yes, I got one, and as far as I know it's genuine - they've done this before and used surveymonkey.

BTW, by posting the URL as you have, I think some one else could take that and fill it in for you... I'd suggest you edit it out.

At first I thought: why give them any information on how to improve, they don't deserve that information.

Then I decided to do the survey to let them know how I feel about their lack of sales and their ESP platform.

I got it too.
I think they are wondering why people are not supplying more high quality images, especially for creative briefs.
Well it's pretty obvious it's not worth the time with falling prices.

Getty has reduced prices to compete with Shutterstock and it has worked because sales have increased by 4% but that is no use for suppliers as returns are lower than ever.

All the questions are related to site function/ upload procedure.  They've realised they are getting less images than the other sites and figure it must be down to the crappy upload process is my guess, which of course is the least of their problems.

I live next to a major airport.  Over the years there have been numerous "studies" of the noise issue.  Meetings, surveys, sound measurements.  Public hearings, complaint "hotlines".   After a while you stop paying attention because you realize you're just being played. The airlines are in control and are going to do what they want regardless of your input;  they're really only interested in gauging the resistance they'll face and in deciding how fast they can move without generating too much negative kickback in political terms.  They want to be able to say that people were listened to.  Which they were; and then ignored.

I have received it too.

The problems with many briefs is that the return is too low now to invest in them. Most involve many models and high production. No chance to recoup the investment with the cents or few dollars you get per sale. If they want to impulse that program they will have to come with better incentives.

The problems is NOT the upload process. QHero DeepMeta are great tools and uploading directly via ESP is much improved of what it was in the original Istock.

They are not getting the desired amounts of quantity and quality because the eroding treatment to contributors (exclusives and non exclusives).Too many have turned their backs on them. Let's see if they can reverse the trend. It wont be easy, that's for sure.  :-\

I blitzed through the surveys except for the parts where I got to actually type stuff in. I unloaded both barrels there ending with unless you make drastic changes I hope your contributors and buyers all move elsewhere.

Disappear from this planet

I never uploaded a single file to these clowns, but I had a close look to their collection and as far as video is concerned they are just a joke: very small amount of files and the quality is really sh*t, I have not seen a single one of the good video artists submitting there.
No idea about photo, although I believe they fare a bit better there

Agree, but if you check the video collection (istock, I have not looked at Getty), it is astonishing to note how far down they have gone

They've done it at least once before (I got that one), but I don't think anything changed for the better.
When you see the cheap and nasty ads on Getty's file pages (if you're not a buyer and you don't have AdBlock/other), it's clear that their management is out to lunch. Or being severely squeezed from above to make more money with no resources to improve things for buyers or sellers.

In my past I had a bit to do with surveys....generally if mgt don't like what they hear they find something wrong with the survey rather than their preconceptions ;-).

How about paying the industry standard royalty rates of 30 - 40%?!!  When they flucked us out of the rates we'd earned is when I stopped bothering with them.

Politics and power are much more important in the airline/airport industry. More people and more businesses are affected by changes and development.

That doesn't really apply in the tiny world of microstock.

What else would encourage you to upload more?
I wrote:
"I'm not submitting, and haven't for a year, partly because of the current very low earnings, promises not kept (grandfathering in, editorial mirrored to Getty), the Premium Access programme, also because I'm sick of false keywords being added to my files and of correctly keyworded files not being searchable, and totally inadequate response to my ticket about the latter.
You need to do MUCH more to earn your 70% if you want me to upload again.
Finally, these ads which appear on Getty Images are cheap and nasty. Remove them immediately, they're just an embarrassment."

I did one of these for a non-micro company this morning. It was a UK company (Acually the .co.uk, site of an American parent company), yet when I had to fill in my address, it rejected it because I had to put in a valid US zip code, it wouldn't accept a UK postcode.
Incompetence isn't limited to the micro world, unfortunately.

I filled it out and honestly told them what I thought - simplify categories, get rid of the CV and increase royalty rates if they want to bring back contributors.  I told them they need to pay out at least 28% and simplify the upload procedure to match Shutterstock - we know that is sustainable because the industry leader is doing it.  I doubt they will pay much attention but it never hurts to take a few minutes to respond just in case.

One way to improve would be changing the best match in our portfolios. Best Match for my portfolio shows an alarming quantity of old , crappy, outdated files, from 2005 and on. Years ago, following their suggestions then, I deemed them as "non-signature". More than 10% of my portfolio... that NEVER sells (about 0.05% of my sales), although being well positioned in the best match. This is a consequence of giving preference to non-exclusive and cheap stuff. Because, of course, my cheap stuff can't compete with independent stuff. I regret not having deleted these files when I could.

This is the second or third time they have done this and I don't recall seeing a single thing positive happen, only further, deeper cuts.  These surveys are not intended to do anything of value for contributors, they are really a way to figure out how Istock/Getty can get more out of us.  "We want more of your content, but rest assured we will certainly keep cutting your royalties, we promise."

Well if they just Googled for opinions they'd find this forum and see a lot of pretty negative stuff.  So they tell themselves that forums are mostly a few angry cranks, and think that if they surveyed contributors randomly, they'd get a more 'balanced' response.

Must be their fantastical systems of automation efficiently hard at work. Write back and remind them its not all about the money and include some link suggestions on where to purchase some inexpensive lens caps. I am sure they will be able to closely relate.

when rate was 25 30 they not sell a lot...now my experience is they are selling a lot...sure i d like 25 but better 15% of a lot than 35 of nothing....they are growing royalty very month despite a small portfolio compared to fotolia.

yesterday i received the pdf of a sale of my rm representatives documentary agency, one of the most respected in the world....64 dollar sale i received 7 dollar cause it was sold by a second representatives. 11% royalty and on the paper their royalty free is 50% rate for me.

Over the last few months, sales have been very few and far between for me on iStock. By comparison, SS is doing much better and I'm ready for my second payout there. Just seems like a waste of time submitting content to iStock. And the 2c and 9c payments just adds insult to injury. What a joke.

My guess is that they got into a bit of a panic with the portfolio deletions and slowdown in uploads since the latest changes but the workers at the coalface have zero flexibility to make any real changes. Getty head office probably dictate the comission levels. All istock staff can do is pointlessly tinker with uploads and the like.
