Congrats to Hidesy who has just passed 300,000 downloads at iStock.

I last congratulated her in March this year on achieving 250,000, so she's sold a further 50,000 images in about five months.

I reckon she's getting an average of $1.20 or so per download, so at an annualised 120,000 downloads that's $144,000 per annum or AUD $170,000 (Australian Dollars).

For comparison, a good stockbroker in Sydney will be on a basic salary of about AUD $120,000 plus benefits and bonus.

She is a shining example to us all.  What's more - she's only 27 years old and until five years ago had never taken a professional photo!  Gulp!

That stockbroker in Sydney is paying living costs over double of what Hidesy pays living outside Brisbane.  Add to that the commute and 'corporate wardrobe' expenses that the stockbroker pays, but subtract Hidesy's equipment costs, and you could say she's earning double, relatively speaking.

Awesome achievement wish I had the time (and the talent) to put together a portfolio like hers.

Just as an aside Istock announced that Lisa Gayner hit 500,000 in early June and now has 562,000 downloads, 20,000 downloads per month is huge.

Now here is the million dollar question, do you think she would have made more is she wasn't exclusive and sold on other sites, I think she probably would have made double if her portfolio was on SS and DT as well, even considering the loss of exclusive bonus at IS which is more than made up for by the higher payouts at other sites.

At a guess I'd say she would have been far worse off my not being exclusive; the other sites do not have the customer base to be able to sell in such volume.

It's an easy calculation - IS has 2 million customers, DT has 350,000 of which 14,000 are photographers.

For comparison, have a look at lisafx - last time I looked she'd sold 90,000 at istock and 11,000 at DT.

But if you add in SS where she would easily sell 1500 plus images a day, their are quite a number who do that there, any additional images sold at DT (or other site) would be a bonus. I really think being exclusive would be a limiting factor to potentially greater income. Besides I'm sure any site would welcome a photographer like her with open arms and do all the donkey work to put the images up.

That's not correct KR - Yuri holds the daily record at SS at 1190 downloads.

Hidesey sells 300 a day at IS at an average of $1.20, that's equivalent to 1,200 a day at SS.

I asked her whether she had ever considered spreading her portfolio to other agencies, and she said she is being approached all the time but will never stop being exclusive at iStock.

Besides, if she wants to broaden out she now has access to Getty.

Being exclusive at IS and broadening out to RM agencies and other specialist fields would make a lot of sense and be a good economic strategy.

Hatman, you never know, maybe there is someone at SS with more Dls/day then Yuris, maybe iofoto. I think he has a lot more images online then Yuris. However, there might be, one or so but not quite a number of photographers who have so many downloads. I guess I would stay where I am If I am Hidesey. Exclusivity is not allways a bad thing. It makes some things a lot easier. She is at the top at IS. I think money probably is not a problem in her case.

Although iofoto has a lot of images available I doubt that he sells anywhere near the numbers of Yuri or Andres - you only have to look at StockXpert to see he has the most images but doesn't appear on the favourite photographers list.

I'm sure he sells lots of pictures, just not as many as some might think.

You might be right. But iofoto is not that long in microstock as Yuris and Andres and therefore has not so many dls. Look at there stats at DT. Iofoto joined Feb 2007 and has allready more than half the dls Yuris has. Yuris is there since end of 2005. But probably you cannot really argue in this way. For some people some agencies just do not seem to work. However Hidsey seems to be happy at IS  :)

That's Yuir's own personal record which was set some time ago,I believe his portfolio has grown since then and he probably sells farmore than that every day, there are quite a few other photographers at SS who have larger porfolios than Yuri and probably sell as much if not consideribly more than he does. Hidesy also has a larger portfolio of equal quality, you would expect her to sell more, she doesn't have access to the good side of Getty just the photodisc stuff.

I really do believe she would make a lot more selling on other sites, exclusivity doesn't make sense, it never has and it never will, it limites your market, besides the payouts at IS for exclusivity aren't as good as being non exclusive at other sites.
