So my best selling image on iStockphoto is a macro shot of a dime(heads up). I don't even think it's that great of a photo anymore. It looks blown out and the background should be white. But people seem to like it. What about the rest of you? Anyone have a not so great photo that has sold well beyond what you think it should?

i am guessing it is mostly about getting lucky in the search results. It doesn't have THAT many more downloads than the other images, or other dime images.

I posted somewhere a few weeks ago about something similar. I have a plain background type image that has always sold okay. Suddenly on IS it starts going crazy. This lasted for a few weeks, now it has tapered off, but still sells a few a week. I can't find it anywhere on the site that would indicate why.
But I'll take it

Something I was told by Hidesy - "NEVER try to guess what the market will buy; just upload pictures and let the market decide....."

I wish I could remember that. I've deleted shots that I thought were just "ho-hum" but technically okay, then wake up in the middle of the night wondering why I did that. Most shots I've thought were sure winners turned out to be poor sellers---others that I thought were rather mediocre and boring took off like a rocket. I wish I were able to completely shut off my internal second-guesser.

Hidesy is so right! And the proof is in two of my extended license sales. Someone just paid $50 at Fotolia for a photo of a $1.99 place mat, and another person paid $100 at SS for a shot of a wrinkled brown paper bag....netting a total of $38.50 for what is essentially junk.

Crap photos that anyone can shoot.

I've stopped deleting shots. Buy some larger hard drives. I've got about 1 TB of crud now. ;)
