Title: Wow -- the Power of PHP. Does Istock have an API?
Post by: Leo Blanchette on April 18, 2011, 21:48
I've been experimenting with some PHP scripts to gather info from my port. I've even been able to spider all the pages of the AJAX driven Friend Lists using some pretty cool regex and cURL functions and gather up user IDs for future use.

Actually I hate regex almost as much as I hate cURL.

Does Istock have an API which allows contributors to build applications with? I think I may start developing some if the need/permissions are there.

I'm with you on regex. I've been a PHP developer for a lot of years and it's still hard for me to get my head around. I don't know if iStock has an API, but if they do, it's probably broken!  :D

They do have an API and in the past you had to apply to get the "key" to use it. Early in 2010 they stopped giving out keys (my husband had asked for one) in anticipation of what ended up becoming F5 in August 2010.

I don't know if they're giving out access to the API again - Franky is using it for DeepMeta but he's now a contractor, so it may not be generally available.

Hrm. I should ask support. But then, I do not think I could handle another regex-ion notice.

Actually if anyone has access to whatever standards are put in place for 3rd party applications or use of the site (such as my CN spider/finder script) that would be good enough.

You can apply for a key now. They will ask you numerous questions about the scope of your project, including a request for several paragraphs worth of details. They also claim to not allow the API key to be used on a public application/project that also displays information about other stock sites. It's strictly regulated, but there's no reason you shouldn't try.

Thank you much. I'll start looking into it.
