Title: Elinchrom 500BXRI misfires randomly, in series.
Post by: Lodimup on October 17, 2014, 07:04
Hi, can anybody tell me what's wrong before I go off and buy new flash tubes? I have two 500BXRIs they work flawlessly but sometimes one just misfire.

I can hear 'sparks' but the flash will not go off. This happen randomly, in series. i.e. somedays they work normally. On somedays one or both will misfire, just sparks continuously.

I had a defective bulb, too. They wouldn't fire at all but this one is still able to fire so I reckon it might be something else. I found a solution just now! It's a bad fuse. I replaced the fuse then It just works normally. Fuse was not blown. I don't know what's wrong with it.

I'd phone Technical Support about it. Here in the UK I've found them very helpful.

I'd be concerned if I were 'hearing sparks' that some serious damage might be happening internally. Those capacitors hold a lot of power and they can discharge it very quickly.

I had the same problem. About 1/3 of shots misfired, and it didn't depend on how I tried to fire (button/radio/slave), and when the flash misfired I could only hear a "snap".

My solution: I just tried to push the flash tube (use clean gloves!) and it it was a bit loose. When the flash tube was attached properly, the strobe worked OK again. The flash tube must have loosened in transport or something like that.

I've had this problem in two of my four BXRIs, so I'm suspecting this is a quite common problem (?)

I guess so. One of the studio I worked in had this same problem, too.
