Title: Speedlite transmiter ST-E2 and of camera shoe cord
Post by: Peter on November 12, 2007, 09:45
I have 2 questions! :)

1. Can I use only Canon tramsitter ST-E2 (with my EOS 400D) to trigger the Speedlite 430ex speedlite flash, as slave unit? :)

2. Is it worth to buy of camera shoe extension cord? What would I get with that?

1. yes
2. depending on what you want to do.  You will get a cord that is springy (like an old telephone cord that is coiled... ya know).  One end attached to your camera hot shoe, the other end attaches to your flash. Is nice if you want your flash off your camera but not too far away.. simpler and cheaper than the ST-E2, but reaches a lot less far.

Chode,

I haven't used them, but I hear great things about them.

http://www.pocketwizard.com.

My understanding is they use RF to control/trigger off-camera flash units, so the distance (breadth and length) covered is greater

the question is are Speedlite flashes compatible with radio triggers? They are trigered by light pulse, not radio signal.

anyway, it must be more expensive than canon transmiter.

You're right. I think you'd need two units -- one for flash one for camera.

Definitely more expensive. Just wasn't sure if you knew it was an option.

yes, more expensive and complicated than a canon transmitter.  The pocket wizards do have a great reputation, but it requires extra cords and figuring to get it all to work.  The infra red can be problematic sometimes (outside, or where direct line of site is not an option), but when it work, it works well.

There is a really cheap solution that also work:
You can buy one of those cheap photocell trigger like this one:

I bought one and it works well.  I use the pop-up flash to trigger my 430 and I have another one to trigger an old EZ flash (from the first generation of film EOS).

Of course the adjustments are trial/error but it works... Sometimes I have to diffuse the pop-up with a piece of paper but these cells are pretty sensible and fire everytime.

My 420ex keeps stalling whenever I try to use a cheap slave-trigger, it flashes once and then doesn't recharge.

You can trigger your 430 with a 560 or 580 aswell   :P

Perhaps this is what you are saying - but you loose the ETTL (automatic exposure) when you use it like this, but you would also loose it with the pocket wizards as well.  I guess the only way to keep the ETTL is to use the infra red.

I wish canon would come up with an ETTL radio sender
