anyone want to trade comments on lucky oliver photos.

They continually say that it helps sales.  Not sure if that means by leaving comments you are boosting your own portfolio somehow, or boosting the ranking of the site in general, none the less it is nice to get comments and can't hurt anything.

There is a link to my portfolio.  Let me know if you left a comment and give me a link to your portfolio and I'll do the same.

looks like they are playing the Google game and trying to increase their ratings on google.

Just beware the Google shuffle (when they change their serach method and previoius numbers 1's disappear - it has destroyed many internet businesses).

That's a very good idea Tyler.  And it is obvious that it supports Bryan's wish to get some potential buyers' attention.  Maybe to make it more practical, have a list of the LO photographers  who would like to participate on the right column along with the lightboxes?

As a side note, there was a LO photographer a few months ago who reacted quite strongly when one of the comments was to whiten a little bit more his model's teeth.  He expressed his desire not to receive any comments on his portfolio so that the comments wouldn't influence negatively his sales.

Since in this context the idea is to have more exposure to get some sales, I would suggest to leave comments only for the pictures we find appealing, the same way we only gave a 5-star rating for our preferred pictures on each IS portfolio.

Just read them, thanks :)

Ouch, you martial belts question...
...yes, they are 'ours', my children's  ;)  would it hurt the sales if I would answer it on the LO site?  Tricky...

I left some comments too.

Any other takers?

Please feel free, if you find some spare time, to leave comments on my images.  You can find them here:

http://www.luckyoliver.com/portfolio/GeoPappas/popular

Please remember to only leave (positive) comments on the images that you like.  Otherwise it would defeat the whole purpose.

Yes, bringing a photo to the forefront with a comment can really add some interest.  I was quite startled to find four comments on one photo over the weekend.

I have a question about that though.  Is it appropriate for the photographer to extend thanks on the photo comments?  If the thank you wouldn't be attached to the photograph for all of eternity (or until it is sold outright  :D)  it would be an easy answer - but if no question was asked directly of the photographer wouldn't it seem like a "vanity" attempt to draw attention to yourself again by posting a comment?  Every time I get a comment  I get pretty excited - but feel like a schmuck not acknowledging it.

Oh, and I'll do some browsing tonight/tomorrow and add some.

I don't know if it was a coincidence, but number of views jumped by almost 30 after berryspun left a few comments, other comments would be welcome.

River - go to your home page
http://www.luckyoliver.com/home
look for a link in the lower right that says "received comments"

it should take you to a link like this (or put in your profile name - mine is maunger - replace that with yours)

Oh my!  there is one photographer (not from this forum) who rated one of my picture.  So, as a thanking gesture, I rated 3 of his in an uplifting way in his portfolio.

Well... he came back to my portfolio.  I don't doubt about his good intentions of trying to help improve the quality of my pictures.   However, the downside consequences of it are that two of the shots now have some suggestions for better light (cranberries) and better angle (apple pie) for improving them  :-[

I know, my pictures are not perfect, but...  I'm afraid it will now discourage designers to choose them, or at least put a doubt in their mind.  Anyway, just wanted to share.

I appreciate everyone here who took the time to go through my portfolio and left some nice comments.  Yes, I do appreciate it a lot, thanks!

This is one reason why I was apprehensive when Bryan first suggested the commenting.  I'm thankful that I haven't gotten any 'negative' comments on my pix at LO.  And I will not comment on any others pictures unless I have something really nice to say about them.
Of what logical purpose would a negative comment or corrective criticism/suggestion serve? I feel they would only hinder a purchase and detract from the picture and it's worth as it stands.
A buyer could look at your shot and first impression be, 'Hey, Great Picture!"  ...then read a comment about a blown highlight or a different focal or lighting suggestion, view it completely different  and then think....  "Humm, I didn't notice that, yeah, maybe I'll look at another shot" ..   That's what I feared about the original LO suggestion about comments.  I wouldn't mind suggestions at all, I'd welcome them,  IF... they weren't available to the buying public.
Fortunately so far, from the comments I have read by many of the folks here,  they seem to be complimentary and of a good nature. And that's what they should be.  We're trying to help each other increase our sales,  not the opposite.
I read those comments  berryspun.  I wouldn't lose any sleep over them.  They are your pictures, you like them,  Lucky Oliver liked them, and that's good enough. You have a very good portfolio.
What's the point?   One man's trash is another's treasure.  Pick any micro or macro site, pull up anyones portfolio,  and a hundred different photogs could come up with two hundred suggestions to  'improve' the shot.  While the owner feels it is perfect just as it is.
We get it every day in this business.   StockXpert will reject my picture as  'too dark' ,   or 'not commercial material' .... and SS will take it and sell it 3 or 4 dozen times in one month.  That's the point.  If you are happy with it, that's all that matters.

I am not against criticism and/or advice from other photogs.  I openly accept it and I desire it. That's one of the reasons why I joined this forum.  And I've gotten a whole boat-load of good to great advice here.  It makes me a better shooter.     BUT....  it  is not appropriate when posted right under a person's photo where potenial buyers are viewing it.  Send it via email, or tell each other  about it here.   Don't hang a virtual sign in the other guys store-front window saying,  "This photo is okay, but it could be better!"
I don't think that was the intention of this forum.  Just as  GeoPappas said,  " ....only leave (positive) comments on the images that you like.  Otherwise it would defeat the whole purpose. "
I've started leaving comments on many of your pictures and I hope to comment on all that want them. I can assure you, I will only be leaving comments that will spur on potential customers to buy your photo!!
When I feel a little more confident about my work :D, I'll post my link too  .... but some of you have already unknowingly commented on my work at LO and they have all been very complimentary.   I appreciate it very much.

The good news is that berryspun's commenter appears not to be one of the family here.  And I know that the family here would never intentionally hurt one of it's own.  It's a great idea as long as we continue to take care of each other.   On the other hand, perhaps the commenter wasn't being nefarious at all, probably only doing what LO wants the comments to be about.. .. constructive criticism..  I just don't think the buyers area is the place to do it.  Make 'em private, not public.
