Title: Dublin, Ireland GTG and Shoot - June 7, 2010
Post by: leaf on March 27, 2010, 04:36
Since there seems to be a few of us going to the Cepic New Media Conference (http://www.microstockgroup.com/microstock-gtg/cepic-new-media-conference/) Lee Torres from MicrostockDiaries (http://www.microstockdiaries.com/) and I have decided to organize a relaxed shoot and GTG around the same time so hopefully people can get both into their calenders.  There is still a lot of planning to do about where and how but it WILL go forward so you can put it in your calender as a for sure happening.  Also, if you are interested in helping out organizing we are grateful for help.

I'll try to keep this post updated with all the current info so you don't have to go search through this thread for all the details.

SHOOT INFO
=======================================
Where: Dublin
Meeting Location for both shoots:
Meet at St. Stephens Green  just inside Fusilier's Arch on the grass. (check on google maps if you are not sure where it is)
Once we are finished with the paper work we will start shooting right away in the park.  We will plan to later walk down to Trinity College (10 minutes walk) and shoot a little there, then if time permits walk to the river and Ha'penny bridge (10 more minutes walking) or elsewhere along the river or that area of the city.

When: June 7, 2010
Casual Shoot: June. 7, 2010 @10:00-14:00
Business Shoot: June 7, 2010 @ 16:00-20:00

Still working on trying to get more...

Cost:
Update:  We will be paying the models 100 Euro each and I'll try to book at least 5 models for each shoot (models seem to have a tendency to cancel at the last minute, so we could only end up with 3 for each shoot).  We'll split the costs evenly amongst everyone who shoots.

It depends on how much help we get from others, if we have to pay for any locations or decide we want any make-up or wardrobe, and how many models we end up using etc.  To give you an idea of cost though, if we had a model/photographer ratio of 1:1, your costs would be approximately 1 models worth for that shoot.  I don't know what the going rate for Dublin is, but in NY I paid $100/model (http://www.microstockgroup.com/microstock-gtg/microstockgroup-gtg-shoot-new-york-oct-20-21-2009/).   We'll try to keep the costs down as much as possible, shooting at free locations etc.  The only thing that will cost though is if you shoot - so you should be able to get your money back from image sales.  If you just want to hang out in the evening or assist in the shooting then it will be free, other than what you spend on food / drinks.  Anyone who comes to one of the shoots and doesn't take pictures will be put to work holding reflectors / lights.  We will be happy to have you  there :)  If everyone who comes wants to shoot then we will switch off assisting and shooting.  Or, if you just want to shoot for one of the shoots then just assist for the second / (third?) shoot, you will only pay for the shoot you actually shot images.

Non-Exclusivity: We will be getting releases from all the models at the shoot so they can be used for stock.  To make the shoot as open to everyone as possible, the images will be free for you to upload to any agency - the only problem this creates is for istock photographers who might not be able to upload the very similar images they take as exclusive content.  I'll let the exclusives decide how to deal with that themselves, but know if you are exclusive and want to upload images from this shoot to istock, there are going to be other photographers who have very similar images on other stock sites.
Models:  I'll put our confirmed model count here.  Hopefully we can have around a 1:1 model photographer ratio (again depending on the number of us who shoot), but at a 1:1 ratio we can group up and get 4 models in a shoot with 2 people assisting and 2 shooting or something....

Facebook Event Page (http://www.facebook.com/events/edit/index.php?gid=31308449395&step=2&eid=116338468392367&new#!/event.php?eid=116338468392367&ref=mf)
Any other thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

REMEMBER TO BRING

    * Lighting equipment you want to use ... strobes, reflector, other things...
    * Your model releases
    * Pocket full of cash
    * camera etc...  of course
    * any props you might want to use

You can get reasonable rates here http://www.d4hotels.ie/ (http://www.d4hotels.ie/) and it's got good public transport links to the city centre.

From the airport you can get a taxi or aircoach www.aircoach.ie (http://www.aircoach.ie) or public bus

I wouldn't rent car as they are expensive, the road signs and the one system is confusing and parking is in short supply.

Worth visiting is the Guinness storehouse, you can even pull your own pint

Fallon & Byrne do good coffee, sandwiches, etc and it has a wine bar downstairs

If any has any questions let me know

Aaaargh, I was all excited - I can get cheap flights to Dublin. But it's a Monday (I have to be at the day job!)
Good luck and enjoy, peeps!

@michealo Thanks for the info, I was hoping you would see this thread.  I actually booked one of the D4 hotels and it was very close to the conference later in the week and cheap so hopefully I am happy with the choice.  I'll have to add Fallon & Byrne to my stops too :)

Are you living in Dublin now?  Are you going to make an appearance??

@ShadySue ... too bad you can't come :(  I think you should get a free holiday once in a while for personal projects!

The D4 hotels are ok, I stayed in the Burlington a couple of months ago, decor isn't the most modern but the room was big, clean and quiet, and the location is very good. I live 160 miles away but I will do my best to make an appearance :-)

Hahahaha I'm a teacher: not even five minutes' flexibility. So I have two weeks coming up with nothing planned; spring is at least three weeks late, and I find this not-snowy but still-bare-trees time very uninspiring. :-(
Hey, though, this looks like a great opportunity - why no more takers?

any chance to do it on the 8th ?

We figured there would be more competition for activities on the 8th, plus I'll need to spend some time at the venue on the day prior.  Any chance you can change your flight date?  Surely the extra revenue will quickly cover the fee to change flight dates.  ..and hotel reservation.  ;)

Hi Lee,

I'm there as you know, and if it doesn't conflict with business I would be super excited to join in the fun. Let me know the schedule as soon as it's set. Look forward to seeing you there.

Best,
Jonathan

There's nothing specific that I know of yet but people tend to organize business meetings for the day prior. If I hear of anything open I'll be sure to post it here.

I might be in for the GTG/shoot.
Maybe from 6-10th or so.
Depends on what models will attend too, do you have any booked?
Any French models?

haha yeah we were thinking to use all French models :)

no, seriously though, - we don't have any models booked yet.  I'm guessing they'll be Irish though.   We'll start doing that soon.

So, who is shooting?
I think I am, still not 100% though.
Holgs, are you attending the conference?
Regarding hotels, the Ballsbridge inn and Burlington seem a bit far from city center, where are the GTG's going to take place?

good question.  I haven't figure out the shoot yet so the when and where is still to be determined.  I'll hopefully get to work on it early next week.

I'm not going to the conference - no offense to those speaking or organising, but I think I can find better value for 190euros at one or more of Dublin's fine drinking establishments, where I'm hoping to be able to catch up with those participating!

I haven't booked any accommodation yet either - I think prices for the places mentioned here have also gone up in the intervening time.

Ok, so Tyler, Holgs, Opla, Micheal and myself. Hmm... there's something familiar about that lineup!

Paha_L and Mikhail, you'll have to excuse the in-jokes about swimming for reflectors.

I had intentions of playing a more active role in sourcing models, but Tyler has generously agreed to pick up the slack. I propose we all buy Tyler a pint of Guinness after the shoot to express our gratitude! ;)  ...sorry, another in-joke.

Looks like we're getting a healthy crowd together for this one.  Andres is also currently booked to be there in time for the shoot, but there's a high chance he'll have to change his plans and arrive the day after.  I'll keep you all posted.

Regarding hotels, the Burlington isn't too far from the city center.  It's either a healthy walk or a cheap taxi ride.  We haven't planned locations yet anyway, so I wouldn't hold off booking a hotel just to be close to the shoot.

Holgs, it's my understanding that hotels and flights are cheapest when you book well in advance, then get more expensive closer to the date, then drop down at the last minute if there's still availability.  As the professional traveler, I'll take your advice if you tell me otherwise, but isn't it better to book as far in advance as you can?

I seem to be on a roll convincing people to attend events, raise ad rates and go exclusive lately, so I'm now going to focus my attention on having you (Holgs) put €190 towards the conference. Given your income is about to shoot to a new level, I think it's an easy investment.  ;)  Ok, I'll stop with the in-jokes now, I promise. Nobody else is reading this thread anyway, right?

Just a couple of suggestions on what to see in Dublin

Take the DART (commuter rail) along the coast, costs about €5 and it give a lovely view of the coast.
The Guinness Store House (which is a museum to Guinness) and you can pour (and drink) your own pint of Guinness, plus they have a fabulous rooftop bar.

I don't have problems with the jokes, but the date is a problem! I am really sorry I have to miss the event as I will arrive in the morning of the 8th :(
(no I can't re-schedule that)

Holgs, anything interesting yet?
Burlington seems bookable for around 250 for four nights, not sure yet weather to get a hotel nearer to the center.

Allright, two shoots are planned for June 7th

Casual Shoot: June. 7, 2010 @10:00-14:00
Business Shoot: June 7, 2010 @ 16:00-20:00

I have the second shoot so late because in Cannes we ran into problems of there being too little time between the first and second shoot.  We will also get a little more golden hour sunlight shooting a little later.

I have emailed the first 8 models (4 for each shoot) and waiting for confirmation that they can make it.  If I manage to find 5 models for each shoot I'll probably book that many so at least 3-4 (hopefuly 5) show up.  If we end up being 5 or more shooters it will be nice to have the extra models.  If we end up with 5 models we'll have a nice group.. it'll cost a bit more but it'll be worth it.   I am not actively booking couples so if one model doesn't come it should only be one model that doesn't come.. not two.  I am also having problems finding guys, so we may end up with one group of all women ..... (girl's day on the town theme???)..  Payment to the models is the same as last time, 100 Euro/model which we'll split evenly amongst everyone who shoots.

I also tried to find models in the 40-80 age category, but that is proving to be very difficult.  They are once again 20-35 aged people.

Again, people can take part in whatever shoot (or both) they want.

Hopefully we will have enough models to split into two different groups.  We'll shoot close to each other and switch models around and do some group shots with all the models.  We will plan to share lighting equipment but when shooting in smaller groups you will only be guaranteed to be making use of the equipment you bring yourself.... so bring what you have.

REMEMBER TO BRING

So whose all shooting anyhow?

Lee Torrens
Holger
Opla
michaelo
Praha_L
Jonathan Ross
Sarah Hipwell
Me

Is everyone on the list coming?  I have put the people in bold I think have confirmed in the last week or so.  Anyone else??  If we are 8 shooters we could probably stand to have even more models.

Sarah

Sounds great, I'm looking forward to meeting you.  It'll be great to have another local shooting with us :)

It looks like we should have a good model turn out if most of them show up.  I believe I have 6 confirmed for the first shoot and 4 for the second shoot.  I could have more for the second shoot already but for some reason I am getting mostly men.  Right now there are 3 men and 1 woman for the second shoot, It would be nice to get 3 men and 2 women at least.

I just sent you a test SMS, did you get it? I hope you don't sleep by your phone with it turned on. :S I think it is always a mess trying to figure out the 1's and 0's and +'s trying to sms to a different country.

Thanks very much Tyler for your working in organising, yet again!

The weather forecast is not looking good for Monday though :(  If it is pouring rain or even slightly constantly raining, we won't be shooting.  We dont' really have much choice.  perhaps some of the models will be free another day but no guarantees.

We should be able to find a location to shoot inside. I'll bring some cheap rain ponchos for the models. How watertight is your flash? The weather looks the same on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the weather is not looking promising...on the sunny side, excuse the pun, the weather guys/gals do get it wrong! I'm thinking very quick on my feet just to post this...If it is raining, how about meeting in the National Art Gallery http://www.nationalgallery.ie/ (http://www.nationalgallery.ie/) in side the main entrance, as it has quite a big foyer & admission is free? Will get back later this evening. S:-)

The flash isn't water proof at all, if it is raining I won't be using the flash outdoors.  Very high amps and water don't mix well... at least not with me :)

Shooting inside could work but it sounds like a bit more of a headache.  We would be 6 models and 6 photographers, which sounds like a lot of standing around time if we are all waiting to use one set of flashes and lots of time where models will be standing around as all the shots won't be taken with all the models.  If we were shooting outdoors we could have three groups of people shooting at the same time making use of all the models all the time and everyone could be shooting or assisting all the time.  Outside also lets us shoot in public spaces where we don't have to worry about getting permission.

Thursday and Friday look like better weather.

We can see what Sarah finds out in regards to location but I am still tempted to cancel the model part (pending rain).  It seems like a lot of expense for minimal or sub-par shooting conditions.  I am totally game for just walking around and shooting ourselves though no matter what the weather.

I'm scheduled to leave on Thursday, it will probably be difficult to change.

How about some kind of compromise? Like 3 or 4 models for one shoot only. That way we would not loose too much money if it doesn't work out.
Title: Re: Dublin, Ireland GTG and Shoot - June 7, 2010
Post by: leaf on June 05, 2010, 07:39
I feel for me, it depends a bit on how bad it is raining.  If it looks like we 'might' have ok weather I am happy to just try it out.  If it looks like it is pouring rain, I'm not too interested in shooting.

Right now on this website though it says sun until noon
http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Dublin/Dublin/detailed_long.html (http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Dublin/Dublin/detailed_long.html)
then only a little rain in the afternoon, then no rain in the evening so theres still hope.

If it ends up raining a lot and you still want to shoot I can give you the models contact info so those who still want to shoot can and I can set up a meeting place for everyone.

I guess we can see how it develops.  Models shouldn't be a problem though, I think we could have 6 for each shoot which is probably what I'll try to book so we can have 2 cancel and still end up with 4.  If we get all 6 models we will have a nice photographer / model ratio of 1:1

Hi Olivier,

A few suggestions for eateries:

-Elephant & Castle in Temple Bar...sublime chicken wings...u can't book but go in, put ur name down & go across 2 Gogarty's pub & have a pint while u wait!
-Milano's on Dawson street - Italian but consistently good & atmospheric
-Epicurean food hall on Abbey street for during the day - eclectic mix of restaurants

All of the above, not dear. Hope this helps!

I'll look again tonight and decide what I am going to do but if it is as much rain as it is showing now I won't plan to shoot.  Not with models anyhow.  If it is a rainy day and we still want to see something and take some shots we can meet later so we can sleep in and get a few emails out of the way in the morning.... maybe meet around noon or something

What direction to take DART, and to what station? Would it be worth to get out of the train at any stops along the coast for some nice views?

Hi Miklav,

Dublin is probably one of the few cities where alot of the museums have a free admission! Especially, if you're not into travelling long distances on public transport but would like to amble at your leisure on foot...I couldn't recommend more highly the following museums(I don't work/or have any affilation with same!)

http://www.museum.ie/en/intro/natural-history.aspx (http://www.museum.ie/en/intro/natural-history.aspx)
http://www.nationalgallery.ie/ (http://www.nationalgallery.ie/)
http://www.nli.ie/en/homepage.aspx (http://www.nli.ie/en/homepage.aspx)
http://www.sciencegallery.com/ (http://www.sciencegallery.com/)

The latter being in Trinity College...all within walking distance of each other

To answer re the DART, I would head South for the coastal views. Hope this helps.

S.

In regards to the shoot tommorow, Oliver (opla) taked me into shooting in the rain (I think Holger was conviced too) - but we are planning to just shoot for 2 hours and just have 2 models, so it will be pretty short, not much time to shoot really, but it will also be cheap.  It should give everyone a chance to get at least 1 or 2 concepts shot in some sort of shelter from the rain. like along a street under a canopy or something. It is pretty well guaranteed rain all day.

I haven't heard if any of the models are interested in the short shoot yet, this is all a little last minute so I guess we'll see what works out.  I'll keep this thread updated.

So, we plan to meet at 10:00 at the same place, unless I can't find any models...

Yeah, it was good.  Good thing Oliver convinced us to shoot.  We had 2 models, and although that wasn't many they worked out and and were nice models to shoot.  We ended up shooting for 4 hours instead of 2 since the weather was so nice.  I'll post some pictures here once I get back to home and can sort through them on a 'real' computer  :)
