The iStockphoto community is full of multi-talented computer-whizes, who never cease to amaze us with their knack for inventing remarkable new iStock-related applications. Whether you want to upload more files at once, get advice on search terms, or obsessively track every single available download stat, some ingenious member of the community has built an app to help.
We think this is great, and we"re making it easier. The iStock API is now being made available to members interested in extra-curricular development. The API has it"s own forum. We"ve also created another to house all the current and future member-application related threads.
Have at "er.

It seems that you can't just download the API. You basically have to give them a business proposal and then if they like what you have to say, then they will give you access to it (which they can revoke at any point in the future).
I briefly tried to look into it, but they don't even let you know what they API is capable of. In other words, they don't tell you the exact functions that they provide. So how is anyone to know what they can use it for?

Maybe that's what they mean when they say it shocked thousands

No, you don't download it. It's a XML/HTTP API. I think you should expect some great apps coming from this because of the extra access that previously wasn't possible. For instance, you should be have to get better stats like a more accurate average earnings per photo, etc. Someone could even write a plug-in for Adobe Bridge to upload straight from there.

" Projects that also service iStockphoto competitors will not be considered. "
So, you can't create a great tool that includes service to other sites and get access to the API.
